CIRCULAR ECONOMY QUIZ FOR STUDENTS

WORLD OCEAN DAY

World Ocean Day is an international day that takes place annually on 8 June. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.

With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.

“Planet Ocean: tides are changing”, is the theme for World Oceans Day 2023 - the UN is joining forces with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activist to put the ocean first.

That's why we decided to mark this day in Zagreb, Croatia.

Teachers Petra Crnjević Trstenjak and Ivančica Tajsl Dragičević held a presentation at the  county council of teachers of the city of Zagreb, where they presented the Erasmus project in which our school is participating this school year. They showed the teachers the activities that the students did this school year.

As Halkkent Primary School teachers, we gathered in the 2-D class on Friday, June 15, 2023, after the report card ceremony. Our School Principal Hakan ŞİMŞEK, Project Coordinator Hikmet BALİ SALİK and English Teacher Evin TÜNCER made presentations to all teachers about our project called Erasmus+ KA210-SCH-A6E443A8 Ecological Literacy for a Sustainable Future. Experiences gained from Türkiye, Croatia, Ireland and Romania mobility were shared with our school staff.

The students of Trnjanska Primary School participated in their first Erasmus project called Ecological literacy for a sustainable future.

The topic was more than interesting and we learned a lot working on the project with partners from Ireland, Romania and Turkey.

We wanted to provide students with environmental literacy skills and teach them sustainable living habits. Working on the project, we encouraged students and teachers that it is important to undertake various environmental initiatives and raise awareness among people around us about the problems caused by climate change.

The students learned what biodiversity is. Biodiversity, the diversity of all living things on our planet, has been decreasing at an alarming rate in recent years, mostly due to human activities, such as land conversion, environmental pollution and climate change. The students of our school researched all this in detail.

We have included environmental literacy in our school curriculum and we are trying to present the results of the project at the local and international level.

Our goal is to raise children as responsible eco-citizens because, after all, the world rests on young people.

Through the project, we exchanged knowledge and good practice, created new friendships, practiced English and met new friends.

WORLD OZONE DAY

On the occasion of World ozone layer day,

school students from Ireland, Turkey, Romania and Croatia

decided to mark that day by making posters about the importance of preserving the ozone layer.

They met via video conference and showed each other posters and played a game about the ozone layer.

The victory went to Kilglass National School so congratulations to them.

We all had a good time even though our joint Eramsus project ended.

We showed all the knowledge that the students acquired

by participating in the Erasmus project by playing a game.

They learned about the creation and structure of ozone molecules, about its role in the atmosphere, about its importance for life on Earth, about the ozone hole and about compounds that destroy the ozone layer. They presented what they had learned on the board so that other students could also see the importance of protecting the ozone layer.
