On Friday 16.12. we had a workshop about the trees in our school yard. Mrs. Nikolina and Daša introduced us to all the trees planted in our yard. As you already know, our students participate in the "Plant a tree, don't be a stump" project every year and know very well why trees are important to us. In the workshop, which lasted almost two school hours, we talked about the importance of preserving trees and the types of trees in our yard. We wrote the names of all the trees in our yard with a waterproof marker on small wooden slabs of fragrant cedar . We will have the second part of the workshop in the spring when we will place markers in the school yard and then we will map all the school trees.

MEDVEDNICA BIODIVERSITY

The students visited the Medvednica mountain, which is located near our school, and there they got to know the plants and animals that live there.

We saw some plants and animal species that live only on the Medvednica mountain and that are protected because there are not many of them in nature.

3rd grade students learned the importance of preserving flora and fauna.

The most significant phenomenon of the Medvednica Nature Park are forests, which cover 81% of the park surface.   Somewhat larger lawn areas are on the park borders, and rarely found  within the forest complex of Medvednica.

Vegetation of Medvednica is largely represented by natural and preserved forests. The diversity of  embossments, the variety of geological structures and soil types appears as many as in 12 forest communities, which show a distinct distribution of types depending on the altitude and exposure.

Today in class, third graders learned about proteins, fats and carbohydrates. On the board they had to put together a menu that does not exceed the daily calorie intake. They also had to use as many local foods as possible that are grown in our region.

3rd grade students visited the Ključić Brdo picnic area near Zagreb, where they got to know the biodiversity of the area. With a forest walk, they repeated how we preserve nature and forests, which plants and animals live in that area. They also repeated how man affects nature through his actions.

The second mobility of the project Ecological literacy for a sustainable future was held in Zagreb from 22.2. until 3/3/2023.

The 3rd grade students prepared a dance reception for their partners in the school hall. They showed Croatian traditional dances and sang a song about Zagreb. They also dramatized the impact of climate change on food production. In the dramatization, they showed the mutual dependence of plants, animals and man. They showed how people pollute the environment and how it affects animals and plants and ultimately the production of the food we eat every day. Everything was done in English and a lot of effort was put into it because the students are younger. Project team

Students of the 4th grade presented the impact of climate change on growing food. They finished their presentation in the school's housekeeping cabinet, where they and their partners prepared a fruit salad from locally grown fruit.

Students under the guidance of a biology teacher presented the impact of pesticides on food production. 7th grade students researched the impact of climate change on the production of local food that is used every day. After the presentation, they baked Zlevanka with zucchini in the household cabinet and treated the guests. They also showed medical research involving boys that studies food consumption and the impact on child growth and development.

As part of the mobility, the school held a lecture by an expert on the topic "The impact of climate change on food production", where the teachers learned how we can better preserve the nature around us. They also used various digital tools in the mobility week. Each school prepared an online game that they played together during a video conference. Students showed great interest, but also knowledge when solving tasks

In the afternoon, they walked around Zagreb, where they got to know the past of the city with the help of tablets. They visited the Museum of the City of Zagreb where, with organized guidance, they learned even more about Zagreb and its past. They visited the NP Plitvička Jezera and Rastoke, where they got to know the biodiversity of the national park and saw the production of flour in ancient times. On the last day, after evaluating this mobility, they left school and returned home.

The students of the school have been participating in various projects for a long time and they are happy about it. They especially looked forward to the opportunity to speak in English, where they improved their language competence. The exceptional experience that students and teachers gained through this part of the Erasmus+ "Ecological literacy for a sustainable future" project undoubtedly broadened their worldviews, improved language skills and created new friendships.

ART EXHIBITION IN Zagreb library

MAY 2023

After the mobility in Ireland, I told the students how the wind park works and we decided to make our own windmills. We also have wind as a renewable source of energy in our country.

Planet Ocean: tides are changing

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.

With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.

“Planet Ocean: tides are changing”, is the theme for World Oceans Day 2023 - the UN is joining forces with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activist to put the ocean first.

We decided to mark this day in Zagreb.

In anticipation of the month of June, the students of our school dealt with the seas and oceans. They researched who all lives in the depths of the sea. They learned about the protective animals that live in the seas and how humans can help them. We were coming up with new ideas on how to keep the sea clean. We invited a scientist who works at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split to visit us, who gave us an interesting lecture about the seas. We have learned a lot and we are looking forward to a new meeting where we will learn even more.
