The EcoEmpower Earth's Operational Design (EOD) Flagship Project is a community-based environmental education, watershed restoration, and freshwater security initiative in Merawi, Mecha District, Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Led by EcoEmpower, the project promotes public understanding of Earth's Operational Design (EOD)—a proposed systems-based framework describing how Earth's natural processes generate, purify, transport, store, and distribute freshwater that sustains ecosystems, food production, and climate regulation [1–4]. The project aims to strengthen environmental stewardship, improve freshwater security, and build resilient communities. Merawi was selected because it reflects many global environmental challenges, including groundwater depletion, land degradation, ecosystem decline, drought, flooding, and increasing pressure on agriculture.
While governments and development partners have invested substantially in watershed rehabilitation, afforestation, irrigation, and climate adaptation, many environmental challenges remain [2–5]. The EOD framework complements these efforts by strengthening environmental literacy, systems thinking, and community participation. It promotes practical understanding of rainfall management, groundwater recharge, watershed processes, vegetation, soils, and landscape management as interconnected components of healthy environmental systems.
Schools serve as the primary entry point through children's environmental books, teacher training, environmental clubs, practical demonstrations, and community outreach [1,4,5]. Students, teachers, farmers, youth, women, community leaders, and local institutions participate in practical learning that connects environmental knowledge with sustainable land and water management, building long-term stewardship of watersheds and freshwater resources.
The Merawi Flagship Project combines education with action through watershed assessments, rainfall studies, demonstration sites, groundwater observation, landscape restoration, and community-led environmental management. These activities promote rainfall retention, groundwater recharge, reduced runoff and erosion, vegetation restoration, spring protection, improved soil moisture, and stronger ecosystem resilience. Continuous monitoring, documentation, research, and scientific collaboration will generate evidence to evaluate and further refine the proposed EOD framework [6,7].
Designed as a global demonstration model, the project will develop educational resources, implementation approaches, and practical evidence adaptable to diverse environmental and socio-economic settings [1,4–7]. It contributes to freshwater security, agricultural productivity, food security, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, and 15 [1–5].
EcoEmpower respectfully invites governments, universities, research institutions, schools, development agencies, philanthropic organizations, corporate partners, and international organizations to collaborate in advancing the Merawi Flagship Project. By generating scientific evidence and practical community experience, the initiative aims to strengthen environmental policy, watershed management, sustainable development, and resilient communities in Ethiopia and beyond.
The EcoEmpower Earth's Operational Design (EOD) Flagship Project has successfully completed its initial implementation phase in Merawi. More than 60 children's environmental books were donated to a local primary school to introduce freshwater management and environmental stewardship. The initiative received an overwhelmingly positive response from teachers. With the valuable support of Mr. Mastewal and Mr. Wondwossen, the project's first teacher training workshop was successfully delivered. Following these activities, the school formally invited EcoEmpower to establish the first EOD demonstration model within its compound.
Although the project has officially launched, the ongoing civil conflict has temporarily suspended field implementation. Until conditions allow safe resumption of field activities, EcoEmpower continues advancing the initiative through scientific research, educational resource development, training preparation, partnership building, project planning, documentation, knowledge dissemination, and the distribution of additional environmental books while supporting similar environmental education initiatives whenever opportunities arise.
Every contribution received during this period directly strengthens the project's readiness for full implementation by supporting research, educational materials, institutional capacity, strategic partnerships, and demonstration planning.
