ECLIPSE Programme

The ECLIPSE Programme encapsulates 5 Research Aims:

1. Developing a caldera Health System to diagnose the present volcanoes' conditions

2. Identify what causes switches between dormancy, unrest and eruption

3. Produce decision-support tools with our end users

4. Model the eruption dynamics and estimate impacts for future events

5. Implement mitigation strategies for future eruptions based on our eruption hazard and impact models

Research Aim 1: Developing a caldera Health System to diagnose the present volcanoes' conditions

Better understanding of:

  • Magma ascent and storage parameters

  • Volcano-tectonic interactions

  • Current state of the TVZ supervolcano system

Products:

  • Past unrest historical database

  • Past event long-term database

  • Volcano Health Status System dashboard, displaying the state of the magma systems below Okataina, Taupo and in between

Research Aim 2: Identify what causes switches between dormancy, unrest and eruption

Better understanding of:

  • Eruption tipping point indicators developed

  • Tectonic and deformation component

  • Timescales component

Products:

  • Environmental monitoring solutions - Baseline and interpretation model for geothermal datasets, to support detection and interpretation of change in unrest.

  • Global supervolcanoes collaboration network

Research Aim 3: Produce decision-support tools with our end users

Products:

  • Multi-variate probability analyses

  • Decision support framework

  • Civil Defence and Emergency Management planning and capability framework

  • Lifelines preparedness products

  • Civil Defence and Emergency Management, Iwi, GeoNet and New Zealand Volcano Science Advisory Panel response plans, tested in an exercise

  • Interagency plan, tested in an exercise

  • Citizen science module, tested by the community

  • International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior conference in Rotorua 2021

Research Aim 4: Model the eruption dynamics and estimate impacts for future events

Products:

  • Hazard models during magma unrest and ascent

  • Eruption plume model

  • Hazard, impact and vulnerability parameters and data delivered to Riskscape and MERIT
