Aligned Programmes

Our Programme is one of several large scale government funded research initiatives aimed at understanding and reducing the societal impacts of large scale natural hazards. All these programmes share a common aim of improving the resilience of New Zealand society.

New Zealand large scale natural science programmes:

  • Determining Volcanic Risk in Auckland (DEVORA) - Aimed at a much-improved assessment of volcanic hazard and risk in the Auckland metropolitan area, and will provide a strategy and rationale for appropriate risk mitigation

  • Alpine Faut Magnitude 8 (AF8) - A collaborative effort to save lives by planning and preparing a coordinated response across the South Island after a severe earthquake on the Alpine Fault

  • Wellington It's Our Fault (IOF) - The goal is to see Wellington positioned to become a more resilient city through a comprehensive study of the likelihood of large Wellington earthquakes, the effects of these earthquakes, and their impacts on humans and the built environment

  • East Coast Life at the Boundary (LAB) - A collaborative programme that brings together scientists, emergency managers, experts and stakeholders across the East Coast to make it easy and exciting to learn more about the natural hazards like earthquakes, tsunami, coastal erosion and even volcanoes that can affect us

  • Resilience to Nature's Challenges - National Science Challenge to develop and apply new scientific solutions to transform our response, recovery and “bounce-back” from our wide diversity of natural hazards

  • Quake CoRE - Centre of Research Excellence transforming the earthquake resilience of communities and societies, through innovative world‐class research, human capability development, and deep national and international collaborations

  • Next Generation Geothermal - A 5-year MBIE Endeavour-funded programme for research into utilising deep super-heated geothermal fluids in the Taupō volcanic zone, led by Dr Isabelle Chambefort at GNS Science.

We share common aims with a number of international volcano research programmes:
