If you are confused about how to write your essay, then DON'T WRITE ANYTHING! Come for a prewriting conference instead. The Writing Center strongly encourages you to come in BEFORE you start your papers. Just bring your assignment sheet, and we'll help you interpret the assignment, help you generate ideas, help you structure your paper. Prewriting conferences also allow us to spend more time on any "extra" concerns you may have such as quoting or parenthetical citations. Once you have started writing your papers, you are limited to two conferences per assignment, but prewriting conferences don't count: you may come in for as many prewriting conferences as you want. YOU NEED TO BRING: • Student ID and current sticker for all services. • Printed assignment sheet or textbook prompt for writing conferences.
Books, reference materials, periodicals, and databases are available to students with valid ID cards.

What is academic/progress notice?
Answer: There are two types of notices, Academic and Progress.
Academic notice occurs when a student has attempted at least 12 semester units and the student’s GPA falls below a 2.0 in all units taken at the college.
Progress notice occurs when a student has attempted at least 12 units and the percentage of all units attempted reaches or exceeds 50 percent of all grades at the college. Grades used to calculate attempted units include: “W”, “I”, “NP”, "NC" and all letter grades.
What can I do to have my level 2 hold removed?
Answer: Probation holds may be removed by attending a Student Success Program (SSP 1) workshop, by seeing a counselor in an appointment if you have attended an SSP workshop within a year. The registration hold will be removed by completing an SSP level 2 contract, developing an Educational Plan with a counselor, and completing an SSP 2 Enhancement workshop.
How can I check to see if I have a Registration Hold and what will happen if I have one?
Answer: You can log in to your “MyECC” account and look at the “You have a Notification” message. Click on it to determine what office placed the hold and where to go to remove it. If it is a “level 2” hold, it was placed due to your level 2 status. While the “Level 2” hold is in effect, you will not be allowed to enroll in any class. Nor will you be able to drop classes. Email us at studentsuccess@elcamino.edu or chat with an Advisor to obtain clarification on your questions.
I previously attended El Camino College and I am now returning to continue my education. Why am I on Academic/Progress Notice?
Answer: When returning after taking a “break” in your schooling, you are classified as a returning student. As a re-admitted student, you will return with the same “academic status” that you had when you left. Many students leave prior to the end of a term and instructors must give them a grade. Students may not know that these grades are reflected on their academic record. Your unofficial transcript will have a notation on the bottom left corner for each full term showing your status as of the last semester you attended. If your cumulative GPA was below a 2.0 when you left El Camino College you will return on Academic Notice. If the number of units you successfully completed versus the number of units from which you withdrew is 50% or less, you will be placed on Progress Notice.
How can I clear my status and return to good standing?
Answer: This depends on the type of status noted on your transcript.
If you are on academic notice level 1 or level 2, you will need to bring your overall or cumulative grade point average to a 2.0 or better. Students in good academic standing have a “C” (2.0) average or better. You can raise your GPA by earning “A” and “B” grades in your new classes and by repeating the same class where a “D,” “WF,” or “F” grade was earned. Limiting the number of units you attempt or reducing your work hours can be helpful because it allows you more time to study for classes. You should also consider using campus resources such as tutoring.
If you are on progress notice level 1 or 2, returning to good standing involves completing classes with a letter grade (A, B, C, D, CR, or P) rather than accumulating “W’,” “I,” and “NC’ or NP" grades. Overall, once you have more units completed with a letter grade than the total units of “W,” “I,” and “NC" or NP,” grades you will clear progress notice.
It is a good idea to limit the number of units you attempt and focus on finishing each class with a satisfactory grade. Try to anticipate any changes that may occur to your schedule that might impact your class attendance and plan your classes accordingly. Be aware of the deadlines to drop classes without a “W”, “NC” or “NP.” Check the front of the Schedule of Classes for important dates and deadlines.
Lastly, your status is hopefully temporary, so be patient and persistent. Plan for and practice success strategies. Use your resources (time, energy, effort) and campus resources (tutors, counselors, and financial aid) to help you to return to good standing and to help you reach your academic goals.
What if my grades do not clear my status?
Answer: If your grades and completed units do not clear your status, you may either continue on notice or you may face dismissal. If you are on academic notice and your semester GPA increases as a result of your grades but your overall GPA is still less than 2.0, you will continue your notice status. If your overall GPA declines you may be dismissed.
Dismissal Because of Repeated Academic Notice
A student on Academic Notice will be dismissed if the student earned a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.0 in all graded credit units attempted in each of three consecutive semesters. However, if a student achieves a 2.0 or higher during the most recent regular (Fall, Spring) semester while on probation, the student will continue on probation, but will not be subject to dismissal. Terms shorter than 16 weeks (i.e. Winter, Summer) will not be considered a semester.
Dismissal Because of Repeated Progress Notice
A student on Progress Notice will be dismissed if the percentage of units in which the student has been enrolled, for which entries of "W," "I," and "NC" and/or “NP” remains at or above 50% for three consecutive semesters. Terms shorter than 16 weeks will not be considered a semester
Can I meet with a counselor to discuss my classes?
Answer: Yes, counselors are available for you to discuss your classes, however, appointments may be limited or unavailable during high-demand times, such as registration.
To schedule your appointment submit an SSP Appointment Request
If your transcript indicates:
‘Academic Probation and/or ‘Progress Probation Level 1’: you will need to attend a Student Success Workshop (SSP 1 Workshop) and schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor to develop an educational plan.
‘Academic Probation’ and/or ‘Progress Probation Level 2’ or ‘’ or any combination not included above: you are required to attend a Student Success Workshop (SSP 1 Workshop) and an SSP 2 Enhancement Workshop. You will also need to schedule an appointment to meet with a counselor to develop an educational plan and fill out a level 2 contract.
What can I do if I am dismissed?
Answer: If you are dismissed due to your academic or progress status and you believe you have extenuating circumstances that led to your dismissal you may complete a petition for reinstatement indicating the reasons. The petition will be reviewed by a committee which will then decide whether or not to overturn your dismissal. The petition must be filed prior to the deadline indicated on the reinstatement petition.
If you choose not to petition for reinstatement you must sit out for one fall semester and reapply. You also have the option of attending another community college during that semester.
If I've enrolled for a class two times without successfully completing it, how can I enroll for a third time?
Answer: You will need to request approval for a third repeat by filing a Repeat Petition
The petition should be filed the semester prior to the first day of enrollment for the term you want to repeat the class. The earlier the better!
