In the Computational Biology Lab of Emerging Infectious Disease, research was conducted on the SARS-CoV-2 Corona Virus Spike glycoprotein. In true global learning fashion, this research was interdisciplinary between bioinformatics and biochemistry. The primary structure (amino acid sequence only) of the Spike protein was first analyzed with biostatistics and evolutionary comparison software. After this, the secondary (polypeptide chain structure) and tertiary (protein folding with side chain interaction) structures of Spike were visualized and inspected for any potential anti-viral targets that could render the Corona Virus inept. Results showed that Spike would not likely be an effective antiviral target.
