Food Waste occurs for a variety of reasons
let's mention some of them!
problems with the harvest in the farms such as weather or pests (מזיקים)
planting more than needed by the consumer
A product that just doesn't meet market standards
Highly vulnerable products such as fruits, vegetables, milk and meat have a "short shelf-life"
food that expires at the supermarkets and goes unsold
lack of proper planning, preparing and storing at home results in food that goes uneaten and wasted
A huge amount of food is wasted in restaurants, mostly from what is left on the customer's plate, or in the kitchen itself.
All this and much more contribute to Food Waste, which ultimately ends up in the trash.
In this illustrated food chain you can learn more specific reasons for food waste at every level of the food chain. let's take a look!
Parfitt (2010) explains that Food Waste occurs for a variety of reasons along the food chain . As we mentioned above, that food waste occurs at every level of food chain, starts from the production and to us the consumer (Parfitt et al. 2010).
PRODUCTION
Food Waste occurs on farms for a variety of reasons, problems with the harvest such as weather or pests, planting more than needed by the consumer, or a product that just doesn't meet market standards can all contribute to food waste (Parfitt et al. 2010).
PROCESSING
After the harvest, especially in developing regions, the lack of proper storage facilities, along with unreliable electricity supply for refrigeration leads to very big amounts of wasted food. For example, packaging apples or oranges in big boxes and transporting them to the market through a bad path can lead to ruin them and they become waste.
Retail & Food services
supermarkets throw away billions of pounds of food each year over ordered food that expires and goes unsold ultimately ends up in the trash.
It happened because of a lack of proper planning, preparing and storage. the result is food that goes uneaten and wasted (Melikoglu et al., 2013).
Consumer
51% of the food waste happens at the consumer level for many reasons (Parfitt et al. 2010). First, unlimited access to cheap food comparing to the past. second, half of the global population lives in urban areas, we have lost contact with the reality of farming, fishing and producing food and we don't care. Third, misreading food labels and dates. such as,“best before” and ”use by”.
