Hello everyone,
My name is Mona Yunes and I am an English middle school teacher.
I built a website in English language that deals with environmental sciences, which is intended for the middle school class for ninth grade students according to the curriculum of the Ministry of Education in English (for the curriculum, click here).
an electronic environment fosters digital literacy in students, which includes a system of technical skills that enable them to learn, work and deal with challenges in the digital space (Kim et al., 2008).
Kim (2008) mentioned that students with digital literacy are characterized by visual skills, such as visual- thinking and have the ability to decipher and understand visual messages. The fact that we are surrounded by pictures and music has been part of our lives for as long as we can remember, and thanks to the internet and technology convenience, access to pictures, videos and music have been made easier and thus they became significant and essential educational tools in nowadays classroom(Kim et al., 2008).
My site deals with the investigation and questions about the global crisis of food waste, this crisis has attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to the implications of this crisis on the environment and the planet. And the Learning Objectives will be:
Students will become aware of the importance of homeland.
Students will be able to formulate a strong position to defend their interests.
Students will improve their oral skills.
Students will improve their social skills.
Students will be able to negotiate through the electronic environment.
Students will be able to develop empathy for environmentalism.
Students will be able to practice critical thinking
Students will be able to practice vocabulary related to an ecological topic:
such as: consuming culture, world abundance, globalization, Eco footprint, worldwide and Zero-waste notion.
Students will get an opportunity to think about the globe and its importance.
The topic will be based on the key principles of meaningful learning: value, involvement and relevance, the topic must be challenging, relevant, topical, intriguing and contributing to society, a topic that will ensure active involvement of the learner and also suit his interests and feelings simultaneously.
To be honest, what could be more relevant than the global epidemiological issue we are in? An issue that threatens our existence and the existence of the beautiful and special planet we live on.
From here, I decided to build an integrative English language site that will address a very important topic in environmental sciences and is food waste, we will deal with this topic in a very creative and intriguing way that will give students a chance to spiritually connect to nature and earth and develop an awareness of its importance and conservation.
The pages in the cite will provide different opportunities to use these critical thinking skills, such as, Making Connections between different aspects, Gathering accurate/relevant information about the topic, Distinguish facts from opinions, Analysis and evaluate issues based on facts, Justify why something is accepted or rejected, Problem- solving for a global problem, Investigating teenagers' behavior, way of living relating to communication, Predicting what may happen under certain conditions, Synthesize information and come with conclusions, Inferring a possible cons & pros from different facts and Comparing and contrasting based on different information.
It is built in a way that allows for independent learning and the progress of each student at his or her own pace.
It also incorporates visual representations and different media types such as photos and videos in order to best illustrate the various topics. The site combines various activities in order to allow students to interact with the material. The various pages incorporate online forms, which enable independent learning and assessment processes and dropouts that emphasize collaborative learning in order to encourage students to work collaboratively, share knowledge and cultivate interpersonal communication skills and games that promote motivation and enjoyment.
I invite you to experience the site, and you are welcomed to send any comments to my email: mona8yu@gmail.com.
Enjoy & Best of wishes,
Mona Yunes
