HOW DID WE GET HERE?

At the regular meeting of the East Mills Board of Education on June 16, 2021, the Board voted to move forward with the solution that received the most support from participants in the district’s Community Engagement process. A facilities study was conducted in the Fall of 2019, and a series of six Community Engagement meetings were held in the Spring of 2021. Survey data was gathered and reviewed by the district’s Facilities Committee, which showed the Master Plan scenario that gained the most support was to renovate and add onto the Malvern facility and transition that site to serve all PreK-12 students in the district.

The next step in the process was to submit a petition (see example below) to the voters to put the bond issue on a Sept. 14, 2021 ballot. Signatures were collected during the beginning and middle of July, the Board of Education reviewed the petition and voted on a resolution to place the bond issue on the ballot, and the district filed with the Election Commissioner to hold the bond election on September 14th. Voters approved both required propositions with the supermajority required by Iowa law.
