THE TOURNAMENT OF THE GODS

The Tournament of the Gods was a sacred Amazonian competition held on Themyscira to determine the champion who would escort Steve Trevor back to the world of men. It stands as one of the most important events in modern Amazon history—not only for its trials, but for the dramatic outcome that led Princess Diana to become Wonder Woman.

ORIGIN

The tournament was called by Queen Hippolyta after the unexpected arrival of Steve Trevor, a pilot from the outside world. Tradition dictated that a champion be chosen through divine trial to undertake such a mission, ensuring the will of the gods was honored.

Hippolyta decreed that all Amazons could compete—except those of royal blood, barring her own daughter, Princess Diana, from participation. This restriction was intended to preserve the impartiality of the contest and avoid placing the royal family in direct contact with the world of men.

STRUCTURE

The competition was conducted anonymously, with every participant wearing a metal mask to symbolize equality before justice. Eliminated contestants would remove their masks and join the audience.

The trials were as follows:

  1. Endurance Race – A grueling run across the circumference of the island, with only the fastest 500 advancing.

  2. Underwater Obstacle Course – A dangerous aquatic challenge encircling Paradise Island, narrowing the field to 100.

  3. Paired Greco-Roman Combat – Classic one-on-one wrestling bouts, cutting the competitors down to 50.

  4. Mountain Ascent and Flag Capture – Scaling the highest peak to retrieve one of only five flags, determining the finalists.

  5. Final Trial – The Bullet Test – Queen Hippolyta presented an ancient firearm left by an outsider. Each finalist had to deflect its projectiles using their bracelets without injury—a supreme test of reflexes and focus.

WONDER WOMAN

Denied entry, Diana secretly entered the tournament in disguise, using the mask of her friend Alethea, who had chosen not to compete. She advanced through every trial, her skill and determination outmatching every opponent.

In the final trial, she successfully deflected the bullet without harm, becoming the undisputed champion. Upon revealing herself, the arena erupted—Hippolyta declared her ineligible due to her royal status, but Diana defended her victory, stating that the will of the gods was for her to leave Themyscira.

RESOLUTION

The controversy was silenced when Alethea, speaking from the audience, confirmed that while others would take the mission only out of duty, Diana would do it because it was the true desire of her soul. No Amazon came forward to contest her claim.

Hippolyta relented, naming Diana the Champion of the Amazons. She was gifted the Lasso of Truth, the Bracelets of Submission, and armor forged to symbolize peace between Themyscira and the outside world.
