For this project, I will be investigating how social media impacts others lives as well as my own experience with it.
Social Media Addiction Survey
The survey explained my addiction to be "pretty inseparable" with social media. My results:
" You might not be 100% addicted (yet!), but you definitely need to evaluate how much time you're spending scrolling on your social media accounts. It may not be making you happy. One study by Facebook of teen Instagram users in the US and UK found more than 40% of those who reported feeling “unattractive” said the feelings started when using Instagram. It's a good time to start thinking about decluttering your digital life through a social media and digital detox!
I find this information accurate! I spend more than enough time "doom scrolling" on social media and I would like to cut down on it, there are so many other things I could be doing with my time.
The statistic I found most interesting was how about half of Tiktok users use the app for political news! The article states how 40% of Tiktok users are 18-29 and how the younger crowd relies on Tiktok for political information. I feel like this can either be a big issue for propaganda to grow through the app or it can be helpful to spread a base layer of important news.
Social Media's Impact on Society
Social media holds a huge impact in todays society, whether it is on younger generations or older. Many platforms give people access to post very personal things and for others to research about someone's personal life. I am not against social media but I am also not completely for it. It is an amazing way to keep up a social life with friends or family, and also gain positive connections with people. For example, Linkedin allows people to connect with others on a professional level and find new jobs/ opportunities. On the other side of social media, digital footprints can kill someone's future career or even set them back socially. Since social media is open to everyone, bad people take advantage of this to cyber bully others and it can bring down a lot of people. In conclusion, I think social media should be used in moderation and with good intentions.
I learned a lot of new information about myself and how others navigate through social media. I thought it was really interesting how a lot of Tiktok users like to receive political information. I enjoyed researching different statistics and also taking the survey on where my social media addiction stands.
