Conflict in nursing is the term used to describe disagreements or conflicts of interests, values, or viewpoints between individuals or organizations in the healthcare environment (CNO, 2019). Conflict management encompasses techniques and procedures used to discuss and settle disputes in a constructive and cooperative way. It includes teamwork, negotiation, active listening, and effective communication. The CNO emphasizes the development of a culture of safety, respect, and open discussion within healthcare organizations and acknowledges the significance of resolving disagreements in a fair and courteous manner.
Nursing requires excellent conflict management skills because it improves patient care outcomes and fosters a supportive workplace. The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO, 2020) emphasises how cooperation, communication, and shared decision-making among nurses are facilitated by effective conflict resolution. conflict management plays a vital role in nursing care by facilitating patient-centered care, fostering teamwork, and promoting a positive and supportive work environment (Canadian Nurses Association, 2021).
During my clinical experience, a conflict arose between nursing staff and the medical team regarding a patient's treatment plan. Through open communication and collaboration, we found a solution that balanced treatment goals and patient safety, emphasizing the importance of conflict management in delivering quality care.
