What is Ultimate Frisbee?
Ultimate Frisbee is a highly competitive, non-contact sport played by two teams of 7 players each. The purpose of the game is to score goals on your oponent's End Zone by throwing the disc until one of your teammates catches it inside the End Zone.
What are the rules of Ultimate Frisbee?
Since Ultimate Frisbee is a self-regulated sport (there are no referees), there are a series of rules and regulations for the sport. One of the most important rules is the Spirit of the Game, which places the responsibility of fair play on the players and requires that each one knows the rules, makes their own calls and that all show mutual respect for other players and for the sport and game in general. The Spirit of the Game requires that athletes learn to trust themselves and others, develop communication and conflict resolution skills, and grow in self-confidence, inside and outside of the field.
Why is Spirit of the Game so important?
The Spirit of the Game is another measurement of your team's success. At each game and tournament, your oponent(s) will assess your Spirit of the Game and will give you a score that will include aspects such as: Rule Knowledge; Ability to communicate effectively; Respect for others and non-contact; Fairmindedness; Ability to make your own calls.
Most tournaments determine first place for Spirit of the Game, and it's an honor to be chosen as the best Spirit of the Game among highly qualifying teams.
How is the Game Played?
The game starts with each team aligned at their End Zone. The team that won the "pull" (first throw of the point) will start the game once the oponent team has signaled to be ready to start. The objective of the pull is to throw the disc as far away of your End Zone as possible so the other team has more yards to cover before being able to convert.
Once the point starts there are no substitutions until the end of the point (unless there is an injury). The disc is advanced by being thrown and caught by your teammates without falling to the ground. The disc is in your team's possession as long as there are no drops (fail to catch the disc), no interceptions (oponent player catches the disc or intercepts it to the ground), or no out of bounds (disc gets out of the limits of the field).
The only way to score is by catching the disc inside the End Zone.
Can I run with the disc?
No, players cannot run with the disc. Players need to stop as soon as they catch the disc (they have up to three steps in the same direction as they were running in order to stop) and they need to release it to another player in order to advance it towards the end zone.
Is there any minumum/maximum of throws allowed?
There is no minimum or maximum of throws allowed. The disc can be thrown forward or backwards as many times as the team needs it in order to open the space to move it towards the end zone. However, a player cannot throw the disc to themselves and has to pass it before his time runs out (stall).
What is the Stall?
Each player has a time limit to throw the disc to another player. This is called the "Stall." Most of the time, the stall is up to 10 (10 seconds), and the time runs out as soon as the defense player says the "t" of ten. A defense player has to start counting by saying "Stalling One" aloud, and continue with a speed of a second until the disc has been released. If the player does not release the disc in time, it's a turnover.
