The goal of this project was to setup a system to host games for friends, and to better learn Ubuntu Server. This started out by building a PC a cheap as possible, while still being capable. I acquired the motherboard ,CPU, & cooler as a group locally for cheap, and purchased the RAM, SSD, & power supply online. All of the online components were as affordable as possible on NewEgg.
The first assembly and run of the system can be seen in the next group of photos below. In fact, this system started out with no real case.
This is the current state of the system, and I managed to build it all for $350! Pretty good for scavenged and inexpensive parts!
The humble beginnings of this system started in a box with a borrowed power supply from work, and a stick of RAM from my personal computer. The fan shown here was salvaged from a broken power supply and connected to the motherboard via header pin cables.
After confirming everything worked, I set out to buying the 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD storage, and minimal power supply for the system. The box it all arrived in ended up being the systems case for the first few months of operation.
I think this case turned out well for free to me!
After a few months of operation, a friend of mine donated an old case that he wasn't using to the cause. Although the case was missing all of the fasteners, I managed to mount the system inside with a number of zip ties and wrong screws later.
Even though this build is a mess, it has run flawlessly in its 1+ year of operation. I look forward to adding more onto it over the years as I come across parts.
Future additional functionality may include this being my personal data server!
