Experience

Work Experience:

Life Enrichment Assistant - Independence Village of Avon

My job is to entertain, help, and educate elderly patients in different aspects of their lives. I've learned to develop and organize activities such as parties, games, and arts and crafts to make residents feel at home. My job does not just stop there, in a lot of ways I am someone they can talk to when needed and bridge the gap between them and the management team. This job has taught me how to think outside the box and how put other's needs first. I have learned how things that may seem small to one person may mean a lot more to another. This will help me when working with patients on any level to truly understand the fears and worries that come with visiting a hospital or healthcare facility. It has taught me that life is fragile and need to be treated and cared for with patience and understanding.

Office Manager - Indianapolis Sport and Spine

While employed at Indianapolis Sport and Spine I learned how to built schedules for employees and patients, verified and processed insurance, determined billing amounts based on insurance, and checked in patients. This job has allowed for me to get a better understanding and concrete knowledge about insurance and how it functions. This is a competency that is needed in any healthcare related job and will be very helpful in the future.

Dental Assistant - Weber Family Dentistry

Here at Weber Family Dentistry I learned how to process teeth x-rays, document tooth health using their system's software, organized paperwork, and learned proper infection control and sanitation procedures. This job taught me how to not be scared to ask questions. I knew the textbook answers and knowledge about dental before starting this job, however things are different from place to place. It became crucial for me to get out of my comfort zone and really ask questions. This is an important lesson that has continued to help me with every job I have done since.

Omni Severin Hotel- Front Desk Agent/Starbucks Supervisor/ Barista

When I started at the Omni Severin Hotel I was hired as a barista, I helped take care of guest and customers of the hotel and Indianapolis downtown area. I was promoted to supervisor where I trained employees, managed schedules, kept track of inventory, and managed orders for items needed within the store. Later I took a position as a front desk agent at the hotel where I continued to train employees, helped check in and out guest, managed guest needs and concerns to help create a wonderful stay and atmosphere for them while away from home. I learned how to be empathetic with other peoples issues at this job. I learned how to problem solve using resources given to me and I also learned how to listen to others at this job. Empathy is very important to possess when working in healthcare as well as the ability to properly listen to others.

College Experience:

Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis - Bachelor of Science Health Service Management

Here at Indiana University-Purdue University of Indianapolis I have had the opportunity to learn many different subjects that have shaped and broaden my view of the world and of the United States healthcare system. I have had the privilege to be guided though my young adulthood years by healthcare professionals who have the same goal as I do today: to change and better the lives of those we meet though the betterment of our healthcare system. I have learned how to manage my time, find my passion in life, and better my future all in my four short years at IUPUI.

Internship Experience:

Cancer Support Community- Program Development and Marketing Intern

During my time at Cancer Support Community I have had the chance to work with cancer survivors and patients and provide them with services and support that allow them to take their minds off of their diagnosis. I have had the chance to learn fun skills like needle threading, gardening, and yoga through the programs we provide for patients. Since my internship has gone virtual for the safety of the patients during the pandemic, I have cultivated working from home, staying better organized, and communicating effectively and efficiently though email and video calls. I also have learned to take on bigger projects with minimal guidance through problem solving. These are skills I believe will be needed for the future in healthcare.

Volunteer Experience:

Edna Martin Christian Center- Volunteer

At Edna Martin I helped guide and teach children in underdeveloped communities. This service was seen necessary for this community for working families who wanted to allow their children to be guided and watched by their local church. I helped facilitate activities and help with homework for children ages 5-12.

New Life Wesleyan Church- Youth Leader

I volunteered here for a few years helping middle school and high school aged children. I helped set up and take down, create activities, and community outreach programs for this church in support of their mission.

St. Vincent de Paul- Volunteer

At St. Vincent de Paul we went out to different communities collecting items and furniture for the church to give to families in need. They also had a store where some items could be sold to help support their church's mission.
