RainForest to Reef Ecology Malaysia (DW 08)

Inquiry Question:

What is being do to protect critical habitats and species and how can I help?


As a result of participating in this Discovery Week course students will:

  • Explore various ecosystems including Rainforest, Mangrove Forest, and Coral Reef
  • Learn various field science techniques for studying ecosystems and wildlife
  • Increase fitness and enjoy satisfaction from personal achievements
  • Increase awareness of conservation efforts and scientific exploration in various ecosystems
  • Gain knowledge of the culture of Malaysia


Course Description/Itinerary:

Please find below a preliminary outline of how our week will run. This may change, and we will update here if it does.

  • Day 1: Flight to Singapore (SIN Changi Airport), travel to Sedili, Malaysia
  • Day 2: Ferry to Tioman Island, team building activities and tide pool investigations
  • Day 3: Rainforest exploration hike, conservation activities, local culture activities
  • Day 4: Rocky Seashore & Mangrove investigation
  • Day 5: Beach cleanup, coral reef snorkeling investigation, Rohingya Refugee School visit
  • Day 6: Return to Sedili, Malaysia and beach cleanup
  • Day 7: Return home. Flight from Singapore (SIN Changi Airport) to Seoul

Requirements/Considerations:

In order to participate in this course, students must:

  • Must be able to walk long distances
  • Must be able to swim and snorkel (with a PFD-personal flotation device)
  • Must be comfortable with eating new and interesting foods
  • Must be willing to communicate and work with others
  • Sunday-Saturday


Approximate Cost: $1600-1800 USD

Dates: November 3, 2019 - November 9, 2019 (possibly early morning November 10, depending on flights)
