Hi DW families, it’s the dead of winter (SF style at least) and it’s always nice to get together and warm ourselves with good food, good drinks, and good conversation with fellow DW parents. We’ll be meeting up at 6pm on Wednesday, February 7 for a family-style meal at Papito on 18th street, although family-style doesn’t mean bring your whole family because this is just for parents!
Get out of the house and join us for a fun time. This isn’t a fundraising dinner so your $60 will cover your full meal and a drink (any leftover funds will indeed go to the PTA!).

We discussed our twice-yearly cash gift collection for teachers/staff (holiday + teacher appreciation) and via conversation and a poll overwhelmingly agreed to switch to a new model of collecting gifts across the whole school (rather than by grade level) so that all teachers get an equal gift. We’ll still take half of that total to split across school staff as well, as we’ve been doing. If you want to dig into any of the details further, please contact Deborah (dthrope@gmail.com) with your kindest intentions and offer your help to figure it out together.

Jackson Park Update - Need for the next meeting and/or send a written follow up. Miss this time (oops!)
Parents Night Out Feb, 7- Send out a save the date (perhaps a meeting invite?) so folks know to get a babysitter
Decision: For teacher appreciation week we will centralize all funds and distribute, rather than take by class gifting teachers equal amounts. This was reached after a live pole and general discussion
If this runs well/no significant drop in donations when running it by class, consider moving holiday gift to central as well.
Benefits: Can centralize fund taking with less admin, send out unified message to all families (class parents can also follow-up)
Discussion on guidance of gift, but not clear decision. General sentiment was to provide the broad range or "gift what you can" and not provide a hard number of a suggested donation.
Next steps/Actions:
Communicate we will be centralizing collection of funds and why (fairness, easier to administer, feedback from parents)
Consider a broader survey if we want broader feedback as there were about 25 families on the call

Hi DW families!
Our tentatively-scheduled December 12 PTA meeting tomorrow is being reimagined as a virtual experience . . . aka instead of having a live zoom we’ll be sending out any updates via email so that you can get all the info with minimal holiday timing chaos! There’s a Dogpatch Neighborhood/Potrero Boosters holiday party tomorrow evening as well, perhaps we’ll run into you there?
On the fundraising side, David and Tim report that the community has come together to raise just about $120k of our original $130K goal… wow!!! We just need a little more help to get us there… we’d love your help finishing out this milestone achievement, if you’re able. Don’t forget, December is your last chance to make a tax-deductible donation in 2023 and/or use up those corporate matches!
The PTA has organized a collection for teacher and staff holiday gifts that is generously being run by Deborah Thrope and the room parents who have volunteered to collect for grade levels, so please check your email for a request to chip in if you’d like. Truly no pressure, just streamlines gifts so that all staff get something and you don’t have to buy 8 different gift cards!

Donors Choose project live now! Special request from DW Librarian Sarah Cahuas: I am helping DW teachers raise money to purchase an online subscription to PebbleGo. PebbleGo is available in Spanish and English and it's an excellent research tool for our youngest students and English learners. ¡Hola familias de DW!

DW Parents - We are kicking our fundraising into high gear, and we’re asking you to donate to the Daniel Webster PTA. The PTA raises money for the next school year and our goal is $235,000 by the end of April 2024. We’ve already raised almost $90k, mostly from Pasta Night, the Silent Auction, and the Give-a-Hoot Dinner. We’re trying to get to $130k before the end of December, so we’re about $40k away.
Please consider a donation to the PTA before the end of the year, if you’re able. We’ve funded a variety of valuable services, staff members, and supplies for our teachers and students… and we’d like to keep doing that. What does the PTA typically do with my donation?
At Daniel Webster, the PTA funds many benefits for students, staff, and teachers:
Enrichments activities for students, such as Stage Write and Creation Station
A full-time literacy intervention specialist
A full-time family intervention specialist
Increasing the librarian hours from part-time to full-time and K-1 Art
Funding for supplies for teachers who need them
Additional funding for field trips
Fun community and parent events like Bingo Night, Pasta Night, etc!
If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the fun 3 minute video from a year ago showing the impact of our donations. You can also view the budget for 2023-2024 that was approved last spring for a more detailed breakdown of typical expenses.
How does the PTA decide what to spend money on?
Donations will be placed into a general fund for FY25 (2024-2025 school year), and in April the PTA members will vote between budget options about how to spend the money we’ve raised. In related news… join the PTA so you get a vote (Jami will waive the $20 membership fee if you need it)!
How can I maximize my donation?
Look into whether you can use a company matching program, we are EIN 94-6174741
We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, don’t forget about the potential tax advantages
How do I know my donation will be effectively spent by the new leadership?
The PTA is an independent organization, allowing us to pool together our funds and negotiate how and when they are spent. We will work together with the school leaders and the School Site Council (SSC) in the Spring to determine what services and programs are potentially good options to fund.
Why does a public school need parent donations?
Daniel Webster is currently in acceptable financial health and our students get a good education without any additional money. Next school we anticipate paying our teachers 10% more without a proportional per-student funding increase, putting at risk expenses that are not directly teacher salaries.
Haven’t heard about “Give a Hoot” yet?
We believe in not crowding your inbox with frequent asks. The flip side of this philosophy is that you’re not going to receive lots of reminders. We’ll send 2 reminders for Give a Hoot before the end of the year, but that’s it.

I was so happy to see many PREFund and DW families at the Potrero Hill R&B Festival today, it was super fun! The location on 20th St put us in the middle of everything, the booth got a lot of attention, we raised $1000, and about 100 rocks were painted (see pics!) for our rock garden. Thank you Jessica for organizing, the PREFund board, and Goat Hill for donating… as well as our amazing booth volunteers!
I need to tell the restaurant by Sunday (tomorrow) night how many of us are coming to the Give-a-Hoot dinner at 54 Mint on Wednesday, please RSVP here if you’re joining us. We’ve got several responses, but would like to see more of you! Find those babysitters or just send one lucky parent if you can. Your PTA executive team (Rebecca, Tim, and I) will be there. I don’t want to say my credit card is on file for the event, but I can’t not say this either.
Finally, if you’re interested in being involved in the school please join the PTA via totem. You’ll be guaranteed to be a part of PTA communications and able to vote on budget decisions. Era tan feliz para ver a muchas familias de PREFund y DW en el Potrero Hill R&B Festival ¡Hoy fue súper divertido! It was so wonderful to see so many of you at Pasta Night! We had several logistical issues, such as rain drops that almost sent us home, but the community showed up and had a fantastic time. Nathan and I each ended up with a large pan of pasta… which I will take as deferred compensation, I knew this job would pan out at some point !
This is the beginning of our fundraising season from October to Winter Break. We not only raised more than $10k from the Silent Auction, but we also added $6,400 from the event itself! We’ve got a long way to go in order to generate our goal of more than $230k* and the PTA executive team is here to guide you along that journey.
Our next big event will be the fancy dinner on Wednesday October 25th, so if this sounds interesting to you then please save the date while we finalize the location in the next few days. Then expect some fundraising-related communication in November before the end of the tax year. But remember that if you’re not able to give financially there are so many other ways to strengthen our school and we welcome your participation in whatever way you can! For example, there are tons of volunteer shifts that we need help with around traffic control, the front desk, and in the classrooms.
Thank you to our leads: Deb, Stephanie, Andrew, Monika, Joan, Nathan, Sally, James, Brendan, Meg, Mike, and Yurena… your service was unpaid and extremely valuable (except Nathan who got the Pasta). Big thank you to our overall organizers: Sara, Rebecca, and Fake Rebecca (me, yes I’m thanking myself). Finally thank you to the 30 (!!!) remaining volunteers who helped make this possible, I saw you taking donations, dishing food, setting up tables, and cleaning everything up. I visited DW today with my kids and the place was spotless.
Unfortunately Rebecca was really sick and she’s pretty upset that she couldn’t be there (other than for the 20 minutes she rallied to sit in the corner with a sign that said “sick: do not approach”). This is her favorite event and she planned almost everything - you deserve special thanks!

¡Fue tan maravilloso ver a tantos de ustedes en la Noche de Pasta! Tuvimos varios problemas logísticos, como gotas de lluvia quecasinos envió a casa, pero la comunidad se presentó y se lo pasó genial. Nathan y yo terminamos con una gran cacerola de pasta... lo cual tomaré como compensación diferida, sabía que este trabajo caería en algún momento (Este es un chiste en ingles sobre sartenes)!
Este es el comienzo de nuestra temporada de recaudación de fondos desde octubre hasta las vacaciones de invierno. No sólo recaudamos más de $10 mil en la subasta silenciosa, sino que también se agregaron $6,400 del evento en sí! Nos queda un largo camino por recorrer para generar nuestra meta de más de $230 mil* y el equipo ejecutivo de la PTA está aquí para guiarlo en ese viaje.
Nuestro próximo gran evento será la cena elegante el miércoles 25 de octubre, así que si esto le parece interesante, reserve la fecha mientras finalizamos la ubicación en los próximos días. Luego, espere alguna comunicación relacionada con la recaudación de fondos en noviembre, antes de que finalice el año fiscal. Pero recuerde que si no puede donar económicamente, hay muchas otras maneras de fortalecer nuestra escuela y ¡agradecemos su participación en cualquier forma que pueda! Por ejemplo, hay toneladas de turnos de voluntariado con las que necesitamos ayuda en el control de tráfico, en la recepción y en los salones de clase.
Gracias a nuestros clientes potenciales: Deb, Stephanie, Andrew, Monika, Joan, Nathan, Sally, James, Brendan, Meg, Mike y Yurena... su servicio no fue remunerado y fue extremadamente valioso (excepto Nathan, que recibió la pasta). Hi DW families!
We’re having our first PTA meeting of the year – our first in-person meeting in 3 years! – tomorrow Monday September 11, 6pm-7pm in the DW cafeteria. ASEP will be providing childcare for elementary-aged children until 7pm and making sure they get dinner (you don’t have to be in ASEP). We don’t have food for the adults planned this time, but we do have a happy hour at 5pm at Blooms on 18th st led by Treasurer Tim! The meeting will be live-captioned in Spanish, and recorded for those who can’t make it, but there will not be a remote option to participate. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
What is the PTA? Our mission is to create a strong sense of community by engaging everyone inclusively, increasing our resources, and supporting our school staff, all while having fun along the way! We run community events, help support teachers with volunteers and supplies, and sometimes fill critical funding gaps with the district. Come be part of our impactful work!

Celebraremos nuestra primera reunión de la PTA del año: ¡nuestra primera reunión en persona en 3 años! – mañana lunes 11 de septiembre 6pm-7pm en la cafetería de DW. ASEP brindará cuidado infantil a niños de primaria hasta las 7 p.m. y se asegurará de que cenen (no es necesario estar en ASEP). Dear families, it's been less than a full week of the school year and we've already had a huge party! Great work. Thank you to the small army of volunteers who made our Back to School BBQ possible and especially to the grill masters who kept us fed!
If you haven't already, please mark your calendar for our first PTA meeting on Monday, September 11 at 6pm in person in our DW cafeteria. This is your chance to be involved with supporting our awesome community, learning what we already have planned for the whole year, and sharing ideas of your own.

Queridas familias, ¡ha pasado menos de una semana completa del año escolar y ya hemos tenido una gran fiesta! Buen trabajo. ¡Gracias al pequeño ejército de voluntarios que hizo posible nuestra barbacoa de regreso a la escuela y especialmente a los maestros de la parrilla que nos mantuvieron alimentados!

PTA MEETINGS
Our first PTA meeting will be Monday, September 11 in person at 6pm in the cafeteria – please mark your calendar so that you don't miss it, we'll be going over the scope of the entire year! Childcare will be provided.
PTA meetings will generally be the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm on zoom (and sometimes in-person when possible)
PTA SUPPORT ROLES
Please start thinking about how you'd like to participate in supporting our community this year. We have some PTA support positions that are essential for keeping the good times rolling at DW, and none of them are overwhelming commitments. Take a look at the list below and let us know if you can join us in making it a great year! If you're hesitant because you're a new DW parent, just take the plunge and email us for more info. Sign ups here.
Volunteer coordinator / Room Parent Liaison – coordinate room parents and volunteers for events/tasks.
*Being a room parent is a relatively easy job of just sending email reminders occasionally and checking in with the teacher about any needs, so sign up here!
Fundraising Chair – coordinates passive fundraising (online, local sponsorships) and active fundraising drives/events
Auction Chair – Sara Meskin – coordinates auctions for our big events, thank you Sara!
ELAC Liaison – helps keep the ELAC team and PTA team in communication about events and needs
Yearbook – collect photos throughout the year and lead a small team to design the yearbook
Teacher Gifts – main hustle in December + May. Some meals for staff, grade levels collect $, maybe a few appreciation projects (ask parents to make thank you posters, etc.) Also keep track of sign-ups for regular teacher treats.
Graduation – fifth grade parent who can coordinate a graduation ceremony and sweatshirts
Merch – help us order and track DW sweatshirt/t-shirt sales
Membership Chair – get PTA member sign-ups – basically just keeping track of a spreadsheet of who signs up and sending out a couple reminders!
Lost & Found – help families reunite with their lost belongings, coordinate getting unclaimed items donated

REUNIONES DE LA PTA

Regalos para maestros – ajetreo principal en diciembre + mayo. Algunas comidas para el personal, los niveles de grado recaudan $, tal vez algunos proyectos de agradecimiento (pídales a los padres que hagan carteles de agradecimiento, etc.) También realice un seguimiento de las inscripciones para las golosinas regulares para los maestros.
Graduación – padre de quinto grado que puede coordinar una ceremonia de graduación y sudaderas
merchandising – ayúdenos a ordenar y rastrear las ventas de sudaderas/camiseta DW
Presidente de Membresía – Obtenga inscripciones de miembros de la PTA: ¡básicamente, solo haga un seguimiento de una hoja de cálculo de quién se inscribe y envíe un par de recordatorios!
Perdido y Encontrado – ayudar a las familias a reunirse con sus pertenencias perdidas, coordinar la donación de artículos no reclamados
