We meet monthly to discuss issues, educate neighbors, and brainstorm solutions often involving government officials and city/county staff.
We take positions on issues that affect member neighborhoods and residents across the city and county.
All member neighborhoods and HOAs can access support when dealing with the City or County on a neighborhood issue.
INC members share their knowledge and techniques for resolving neighborhood issues.
INC participates in Durham civic life through activities such as Forums, Awards, and Resolutions.

Monitoring activities in the General Assembly for new laws that affect cities and counties, specifically re zoning and issues that impact neighborhood living.
Participating in community feedback sessions with the Planning Department regarding the rewriting of the Unified Development Ordinance.
Road Safety: Partnering with many groups to make Roxboro and Mangum Streets safer for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers.
Engaging with the Re-Imaning Durham Freeway project.
Engaging with the re-imagining the Durham Athletic Park.
Actively engaging in the removal of lead and other toxic chemicals in city parks.
Preparing for Impacts of the Real Property Appraisal being done in 2025.
Participating Northgate/Walltown Small Area Planning Project.
Conducting other discussions with Elected Officials.
Past Accomplishments:***
Specific Rezoning Issues: For example, recommending changes to Duke University in their rezoning request of an area in the midst of a member neighborhood.
Expanding Housing Choices (EHC): Opposed a wholesale rezoning within the Urban Tier from single-family to multi-family uses without written notice to property owners.
Simplified Code for Affordable Development (SCAD): identified numerous concerns about the expansion of EHC and expressed views to City Council.
Watershed Protection Rules: INC has fought for tough watershed protection rules to protect the environment and drinking water sources.
Major Projects – INC has fought for rules to govern the development of major projects including provisions for better public notice and engagement, neighborhood buffers, clearer building height and other dimensional requirements, and traffic impact studies. ALL OF WHICH IS BEING ERODED BY EHC AND SCAD
Billboard Regulation – INC has fought to protect local government authority to regulate billboards, especially Durham’s strict provisions on new billboards and electronic billboards.
Inclusiveness – INC has fought to end discrimination against LGBTQ persons in housing and family status.
Small Area Planning – INC promotes the creation of special plans and rules for small geographical areas with interconnected neighborhoods and business districts using advisory committees of our residents and other stakeholders.
Citizen Academies – INC promoted the creation of periodic Citizen Academies – programs run by the city and county to promote understanding in local government functions.
Housing Appeals Board – To address the need for better and more logical housing code enforcement, INC fought for the creation of the Durham Housing Appeals Board.
Interstate 85 Noise Abatement – INC fought for the erection of noise abatement walls along I-85 to protect adjacent neighborhoods from highway noise.
Equity in Local Historic Districts – INC fought for more equitable distribution of Durham’s historic preservation resources among Durham’s older neighborhoods.
Removal of Hazardous Materials from Parks – INC fought to remove hazardous tire mulch from Durham playgrounds
