These discussions were held during our small group reading block! Therefore, some students were pulled out of the room for their reading group, so the responses below are from those who were in the room at the time of the discussions!
As mentioned above, I completed these discussions during our small group reading intervention. Overall, this survey was a little tricky since these questions were a bit confusing for my second graders. However, I was able to get some good feedback from my students in multiple areas. For example, when asking the students if they help each other learn, many of them talked about how being quiet helps each other focus when it's independent working time. The noise was definitely a challenge in my classroom as there are 25 minds thinking very fast and excited to share their information. However, many of the students did say that they helped each other learn by sharing their answers out loud and projecting their work. I can tell that this is something that the students really enjoy doing, as do I, as they should be proud of their work. I also noticed that when I asked students if they could tell me about what they were learning while I was fully teaching a lot all jumped right to habitats. That made my teacher heart happy as I put the most work into this -- as I essentially created all of this work on my own! They seemed like they enjoyed this unit which made me very happy! Also, the students really thought they I had them explain their work. This is something that we heavily focused on in my practicum. Almost all the students responded to my SP or I would say "because" or we would put up prompts during turn and talk that said " I think ____ because ____" which prompted them to explain their thinking. They also pointed out in math that they always had to show their work.
The question that asked if I asked if they understood confused many of the students as they didn't really know how to answer. Some of the students were able to say that I asked them to repeat directions and would choose popsicle sticks to ask about the directions. I think I did this more subtly and had them do things like repeating directions or having someone model something rather than just asking them "Do you understand" which made the question trickier for them. It also made me very happy that the students agreed that I would have them try it again before jumping right to helping them. At the beginning of my practicum, I think I jumped right to helping students before allowing them to have a productive struggle. This was something my SP was having me work on. By the end, I had the students work through problems on their own, and try a few different ways before going right to helping them. I think not having as much time for individually helping them when I was fully taking over helped this, but I also understand that being productive is something okay. I think that things to improve on would be clarifying asking if they understand and giving ways to show them how to improve their work when they went back to fix it. I think the most valuable information was that the students knew what we were talking about in class and that they showed their work! Overall, I did enjoy talking with my students and all the valuable information they shared with me. It was clear to see what they enjoyed and what I could improve.
