This graph shows the amount of students who were absent (A), and the amount og students that wrote 0, 1, 2, or 3 facts on thier KWL chart. There were no students who wrote more than 4 facts on thier KWL chart on the first day of our unit.
This graph shows the amount of students that wrote down the number of facts on thier fact sheet. Along the X-asix is the number of facts they wrote, or A if they were absent. Along the Y-axis is the number of students who wrote that many facts.
Overall, I was very pleased with the results of my measure of student learning assignment. I chose to have the students complete a KWL chart on habitats the first day I took over science, on October 10th, 2023. This allowed me to see what the students already knew about habitats and what I could focus on to help them learn the most about habitats. After completing the KWL chart, I was quick to notice that many of the students did not know much about habitats, which meant we had plenty of opportunities for learning and growth ahead! As shown above, I recorded the results of how many true habitat facts they had in their KWL chart. Friday, December 1st was the last day I taught science and we wrapped up our habitat unit. I created a habitat fact sheet with 10 spaces on this last day. I had the students write in as many facts about habitats as they knew. Here, I was able to see how many new facts they have learned since I began teaching habitats. In terms of rating, if students had no increase or a decrease in facts they would be rated low. If students had an increase of 1-4 facts then they would be rated as moderate. If students were to have 5 new additional correct facts then they would be in the high rating.
When looking at the data, 75% of my students were able to have a moderate or high rating in terms of new facts learned. This was something I was extremely satisfied with. The fact sheet was a difficult task for second graders as they had no prompts, no ideas, or no base, I simply wanted to see what they could tell me they learned. Therefore 75% of students were able to tell me new facts about habitats! There were 2 students in the room who received a low rating, meaning they had no increase in facts learned. One of these students I believe scored a low as they simply did not want to complete the worksheet and left his page blank. This has been a reoccurring behavior with this student and we are working to find motivators to complete work. Additionally, the other student I believe did not know how to write his facts in a way that was accurate and understandable. The students who received an N/A for their rating means they were absent either the day of the KWL chart or absent on the day of the fact sheet.
I think if I were to do this measure of student learning assignment again, I would find an easier way for students to record their answers. It think many of the students had more facts but were unsure on how to record their facts on the fact sheet, as given a paper with blank boxes can be intimidating for little second grade minds. I was thinking I could potentially have students record themselves using their online assignment platform and speak their facts so the writing was not so intimidating to them. Overall, I was extremely impressed with how students performed on this assignment and to see how much they were able to grow!
