The diagnosis of concussion in athletes at grassroots and professional levels are hugely difficult especially as there is a huge reliance on self-reporting of symptoms. A study which is recruiting professional male rugby players in England, during seasons 2017-18 + 2018-19, is looking to determine if biomarkers (microRNAs) in saliva and urine can be used to objectively diagnose sports-related concussions.
While rugby has introduced the HIA protocol, which has been shown to reduce the incidence of concussed players continuing to play, a test like this may be beneficial for return-to-play decisions. If a clinical use is determined in this study then this may open up further study of female and young athletes. Find out more about this study below.
