Sunshine is a chestnut Tobiano, and named after the very first foal I had when I was young. Tobiano one of the most recognized pinto color patterns. The patches of color are usually distinct and smooth, often appearing in a circular or oval shapes. Usually all four legs are white, and the head is colored. The mane and tail are often bi-colored. Tobianos often have white that crosses the back. It is caused by a dominant gene, and so Tobiano ponies and be either homozygous or heterozygous. If the gene is present it will be expressed, although the amount of white can vary from pony to pony.
Sunshine was the surprise mating of a little 11 hand chestnut Tobiano mare and a 15.1 red roan Quarter horse stallion. A Breeder friend of mine sent me a picture of her when she was born and I fell in love with her color and pattern. Being out of a registered Quarter horse and with the Tobiano pattern, I was able to register her with the Pinto Horse Association and the International Quarter Pony Association.
Sunshine is by far the sweetest pony on the farm, yet with a little of her daddy showing. One day I let my yearling stud colt out into her field for a bit, and I noticed Sunshine was cutting him like her daddy cut calves. He'd go left and she cutting him off. he'd go right and she did the same, making the classic cutting horse moves. She was determined to keep the colt away from the others in the field. We have hopes as she grows that she may become a barrel racer for my grandkids.
