Technical Services fills a variety of campus support roles, mainly in the realm of special event support. As you might guess from the name, most of our support is of a technical nature, ranging from the relatively mundane setting up of audiovisual equipment for lectures to power for bands and events and a myriad of other technically related activities.
We assist departments and student organizations throughout the Duke campus including Duke Athletics, academic classes and meetings, student organized bands and speakers, and University-wide events such as Graduation and Convocation.
We provide on-going operational and maintenance support of electronic systems for a variety of facilities on campus including the Duke Chapel, Cameron Indoor Stadium, and Wallace Wade Stadium.
In the past, we arranged for and set up (with the help of OIT and several other Duke depts.) 30' wide video projection for Duke Basketball's frequent trips to the Final Four. With the current video board in Cameron, the need for projection is no longer there, but we are still heavily involved with such events, including Countdown to Craziness.
More common support of sporting events involves setting up and maintaining the sound system and scoreboards in Cameron Indoor Stadium and Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium for football, volleyball, wrestling, and men's and women' s basketball. (Those front row seats for Basketball are nice, but not being able to cheer is really difficult). Our support of sporting events also includes field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, swimming, and several other sports activities.
We support many of the activities of Duke Chapel: weekly Sunday morning Protestant services, Sunday Evening Mass, and Thursday Vespers, as well as weddings, funerals, memorial services and special services and events.
We also do sound reinforcement for bands, mics on the quad, conference support, major musical touring groups, etc.
We work with several other University support departments with varying degrees of frequency. Special Events Services is involved in many of the events that we are, dealing with "the things that don't plug in" (tables, chairs, stages, etc.). Theater Operations supports several theaters around campus, including Page Auditorium, Reynolds Theater, Baldwin Auditorium, Schaefer Theater, and the Griffith Film Theater, doing much the same thing in the theaters that we do around campus.
Although we do some audiovisual support in classrooms, most of classroom support for Trinity College classes is handled through Trinity Technology Services.
The Fuqua School of Business also has a multimedia support dept.
