Uniforms
All standard patrol uniforms are acceptable while operating as a DSPD Motorcycle Unit, except SWAT armor. Deputies are encouraged to wear a helmet for safety.
Motorcycle patrols should only commence when sufficient patrol vehicles (at least 2-3 units) are already deployed. Motorcycle units serve specific tactical needs, such as:
Navigating dense urban areas and tight spaces.
Pursuing suspects in off-road or hard-to-reach locations.
Responding quickly to crimes involving evasive suspects or foot chases.
Motorcycle deputies must maintain communication but should minimize radio use while in motion unless necessary. If a motorcycle unit is the only officer with visual on a pursuit, they must relay callouts.
Carrying extra armor and medical supplies is highly recommended, as motorcycle officers may fall off during a pursuit, causing injuries. A shotgun or high-powered sidearm is also advised for self-defense, as motorcycle units can be easily isolated from backup.
Maintain safe distance when chasing suspects to avoid tactics such as reverse-ramming, which can knock a motorcycle deputy off instantly.
Motorcycle units should position themselves tertiary in a pursuit, staying out of primary traffic lanes while maintaining proximity for quick maneuvering.
Use sidewalks when safe to do so to maintain a strategic position away from congested pursuit paths.
Be ready to take primary if other officers crash or lose visual.
Communicate overtaking maneuvers on radio to avoid collisions.
Motorcycles excel at following suspects into tight alleys, narrow paths, and underground locations where patrol vehicles struggle.
Pursuit Termination: Instead of PIT maneuvers, motorcycle officers should coordinate with roadblocks and controlled slowdowns.
At speeds below 25mph, tasers may be deployed to safely detain the suspect.
If suspects enter restricted pedestrian areas (e.g., train stations), taser use is authorized to prevent public endangerment.
LOCK YOUR MOTORCYCLE AT ALL TIMES. Motorcycles can be instantly stolen if a suspect tackles the rider.
Lock the vehicle even while seated to prevent quick theft.
