  • "CROSSING A BRIDGE CALLED BOOKS"

  • "you can't learn what you don't know"[Extend your knowledge]
    - Dr.B wrote his path by changing his environment. He was eager to not be home (for a different reason) but it resulted in him being productive. [Keep it moving, do not settle]
    - Dr.B wanted a better life and he got it because he was open minded. He received advice from Yamizaki and took it. [Be open to correction. Be open to learning from others]
I believe a lot of my intelligence comes from being included in adult conversations at a certain age. Growing up from a chaotic household, there's always something to talk about. My mother encourages us to talk about how we're feeling. Because of that, I've always been the type to communicate and comprehend. Reading how Dr.B turned his life around is inspiring. I see myself in Yamizaki because I'm the friend that enforces better practices and habits. So seeing she was able to help Dr.B gives me more hope in helping those around me who may not realize they have more ahead of them.

  • DR.BETANCES TALKS ABOUT LEARNING LOSS

  • Dr.B is passionate about better education. He mainly spoke about the importance of reaching out for guidance. Guidance is not just people, but books as well. The significance in reading is that you could ultimately extend your vocabulary. Dr.B taught us that if you're not reflecting, you're not learning to your full potential. One big thing that changed is my interest in seeking for those that may need my guidance, and my search for a mentor. I did not get to grow up with an individual who has professional experiences. It's important I start reaching out for assistance even if it seems so scary.
I plan to dodge learning loss by keeping my mind productive. I will read and reflect educational books, read up on the careers I desire, reach out to the people I find inspiring, and analyze the sport I love most; soccer. The five books I plan to read this summer are
"Shogun" by James Clavell, "Untamed" by Glennon Doyle, "History of my Life" by Giacomo Casanova, " The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch, and The Tao Te Ching- translates to "the way of integrity". After being in toxic relationships I had trouble doing things for my well-being. These are books that can strengthen my mind and improve my character.

  • HOTEL SECURITY

  • Mr. Paul Betancourt spoke about his experiences as a security guard. Operational security is involved in every aspect. Security is important and one of the most proactive +reactive jobs. When something is wrong, security is the first people to be called. Security also practices customer service because they are sometimes the first and last people a customer sees. I learned that being a security is more than holding a clipboard and writing down names.
I feel more educated about our securities duties. This presentation taught me to be more appreciative of security, I've decided to make it a point to go and tell other people to be more appreciative as well. Security requires training and practice, it is no where close to simple. The 10-5 rule caught my attention because I never realized how welcoming security is. It is also a rule I could apply in my future jobs.

  • EXECUTIVE HOUSEKEEPER'S REACTION

  • Mr. Jason Jesus shared his experience working in the hospitality industry. As he said, he was successful because training on Guam is different from the states. His first job in housekeeping was at Hilton from 2001 to 2006. He was offered opportunities as a manager because he was well at his job. One of his accomplishments was being a dual role manager. Mr. Jesus worked as a manager for most of the 21 years he was working. He was an executive manager for housekeeping, where he oversaw hotels in Oregon and Hg, California. He has a never ending list of job experiences!
    I
was intrigued to know he had gotten very far without finishing his college degree. I didn't realize how great it is to study on Guam. We are eminently hospital to our guests and to each other. Mr. Jesus mentioned he stood out because philosophy and hard work here is nothing like the outside. He gave me hope in gaining experience from hotels here on Guam. I've always been interested in the front desk or food and beverage. However, I will be considering housekeeping, courtesy of Mr. Jason Jesus.

  • BASIC FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT TIPS

  • Managing money is a big responsibility in life. My whole life I’ve made it a point to budget. Taking care of your finances is planning how much you will spend. When Mr.Chong mentioned college and a new car, I realized those are my next big decisions. I will definitely make it a point to apply for scholarships and PELL grants. Also, a brand new car sounds very nice, but I think a used one will be just right for me.
I never knew that it is better to own than rent. I always thought of renting my first home, but now I’m reconsidering. His tip on saving up for retirement stood out to me because it’s never been brought to my attention. I looked into it and I will now be considering a 401k and IRA as soon as I start working. These are tips I haven’t had a conversation about before so it will definitely stick with me.
Managing finances are important because nothing is free in life. Especially in adult life, everything costs money. Categorizing gives you a chance to spend what you could afford. This puts you at lower risk of being in debt. Money can affect your time and energy. It will decide if you have to work harder depending on your responsibilities and your status on income. It will also affect your marriage and relationships.

  • MR.B’S 7 MIGHTY TRUTHS

  • Mr.B’s mentor showed interest in helping him. The seven mighty truths were those that she believed would guide him into excelling. It’s all about being on the right track. Education is the first priority. There’s working to graduate, and then there’s doing beneficial things like reading books and speaking to those who are intellectual. Another thing to practice is spiritual health. By engaging in healthy activities, eating right, and even worshiping/ meditating. Lastly, finding a reliable personal guidance. Seeking assistance when needed is important as well as studying with those who have the same morals.
These seven truths look simple, but are very very important. They influence your aura and morals. For one, going to school isn’t just about graduating but the fact that you’re learning. Also, I believe that seeking education out of school is extremely beneficial. It helps your critical thinking and problem solving skills. When I take care of my spiritual health, it improves my social and decision making skills. Seeking for assistance offers great opportunities. It’s important to be open minded to new things. It all starts with your interest in learning. As soon as you open that door(to learn new things)for yourself, you are basically walking your staircase to success. I agree with everything Mr.B has to say.
