"The Problem with 988: How America's Largest Hotline Violates Consent, Compromises Safety, and Fails the People" is a critical examination on the practices of America's largest suicide and crisis lifeline. 988 also hides in plain sight as other crisis numbers. However, for the sake of transparency, the numbers and websites are made available on this page. You are responsible for deciding what is right for you. As a reminder, a caution statement is listed under each hotline in red. Some of these website often contain other helpful resources.
Alternatives that have strict policies against "non-consensual reporting" (they will not call the cops or EMS without permission) are also made available. These are sometimes referred to as "peerlines" or "warmlines" to distinguish themselves. Often these helplines lack the same funding and resources and have limited hours, but are also more culturally responsible.
Legally, healthcare providers are required to tell you to call 911 in case of police emergency, but is that the safest option for you? From a public health and social justice point of view, perhaps not. You can do more reading here and here. Do what makes you feel safest. Below are alternatives to calling 911 including for mental health emergencies and crime.
