There are three main areas of a supervision strategy in my plan: administrative, educational, and supportive (NASW) (2013). The Administrative function includes individual training with clear job description and expectations to develop staff competence, individual and group supportive evaluations, and supervision couching for the first 4 weeks. The administrative supervision is focused on the organization’s policy and the work performance of the supervisee (NASW) (2013).
The educational supervision is focused on the development of the supervisee’s skills and knowledge. This supervision will begin with a clear description and transmission of the vision, mission, and values of the organization, specialized program training according to the job position, promote an empathetic communication technique, and provide personality test (Kroeger, O., Thuesen, J. M. & Rutledge, H. 2002) to help them with self-awareness and strength approach
Equally important is supportive supervision. This factor is focused on providing a positive work environment that can contribute to worker effectiveness and retention, providing instructive task assistance, social and emotional support to the supervisee, and promoting interpersonal interaction.
My Definition of Leadership
Leadership is an answer to the call of the Lord to serve others with humility, empathy, sensitivity to their suffering, and a clear path to a life purpose as Christian Servants. My five core values for effective leadership include the sense of community under the Christian concept of loving others as we love ourselves. Also, the value of wisdom that I pursue and pray to the Lord to obtain from the Holy Spirit to guide the people I have under my wings. Another important value that I have is the use of love in every single action or contact with others I have every single day. Personal development is another value I pursue to be able to grow in service with excellence and to feed my spiritual life. Finally, another important value I appreciate and like to practice is loyalty toward other human beings. They help me to be conscious of others’ strengths and weaknesses and to be able to love them and serve them as the children of God.
Characteristics of an Effective Leadership
I believe that some of the main characteristics of effective leadership include the sense of responsibility of being a role model that guides others to know the love, compassion, empathy, and mercy of the Lord through our actions and clear vision of his will. Another important characteristic is to know our mission in life under the salvation plan of God for the world. If we have that trust and let his Holy Spirit guide us, we will lead them on the right pathway.
Some of the strengths I am conscious of includes the ability to appreciate and understand other people’s point of views, their accountability, reliability, problem-solving skills, enthusiasm, creativity, and leadership skills. These strengths help me to manage people in an assertive way understanding their ideas and individual needs. As a Latina leader, I must deal with many challenges related to discrimination and trust issues. Women have fewer opportunities but being a Latina worsens the situation. We must conquer more battles than normal Caucasian women. My strengths also help me to be courageous and persistent when I find obstacles in my way.
Weakness
Some of the most important limitations that impact my leadership include the fear to say no when I know I have no time to do it. I overload myself with too much work and get overwhelmed and frustrated. Another weakness I am conscious of is that I do not stick to my plans. I tend to be flexible and sometimes I lose sight of my goals. Even more important is the fact that I get demotivated and discouraged easily. I depend on others’ opinions and rely too much upon others’ support getting too sensitive and losing confidence in myself. I like to work in a supportive environment, but I get frustrated if others do not work as a team respecting each other when working as a team. These weaknesses damage the quality of my work as a leader and as a Christian Catholic activist trying to impact my world.
