Hello!
My name is Dr. Rocio Garcia Reyes. I am a Mexican immigrant, mother of six, and grandmother of four. It was an honor to be nominated as one of the 100 most influential women in Southern California in 2022 because this nomination it encouraged me to grow and be an agent of hope to the World.
I was seventeen-year-old when I got married and decided to come to this country to pursue the American Dream, with a small back-pack and big plans for the future. My parents raised our family practicing strong Christian values, that were very powerful to overcome adversity with the challenge with no family or friends in this Country. My husband and I rised our family with many difficulties and worked hard to provide the most basic needs. We started our spiritual journey as a very active and committed couple at our Catholic parish, leading church activities and founding two different prayer groups. We spent 20 years raising our kids and serving the Lord’s flock supporting our Christian community and their Pastors.
Later in life, we begin our journey in education. My husband and I were part of the religious leaders at our parishes first, in the San Gabriel Mission Catholic Church in San Gabriel CA, then at St. Margaret Mary in Chino, CA, and currently at Our Lady of Guadalupe Chino, CA for 32 years. In my service to the Lord, I could observe the great need of mental health resources in our parish, especially in the Hispanic Catholic community. We continued to strive for our master’s degree in Marriage in Family Therapy program at CBU, so we can aliviate our community. After my husband passed away from Covid, I decided to pursue my Doctorate in Social Work at CBU to obtain the leadership skills and resources needed to serve the community as the Lord's servant. I am grateful to CBU and all the people who inspired and modeled my personal mission to serve others with love and passion.
Rocio G. Reyes is an active community leader creating awareness among the members of the Catholic church. Families and Individuals that are suffering from a lack of information about mental health, and the lack of professional resources to enhance their family’s well-being of Catholic Hispanic Immigrants.
For these reasons, devoted her life to study counseling psychology and received an associate degree in behavioral sciences at Norco and Riverside Community College, as well as her bachelor’s degree at University of Riverside (UCR), and master’s in counseling psychology from California Baptist University. She is graduating with her Doctorate in Social Work (DSW) at California Baptist University in 2023. Ms. Reyes co-founded a non-profit organization, dedicated to tending the needs of the Catholic community and Hispanic immigrants.
In 2017, guided and supported by a personal Spiritual director, and a group of mental health professional experts, Rocio took the challenge to encourage the creation of this nonprofit organization based on Catholic values to serve the underclass; named Safe Harbor Catholic Counseling Institute. As President, she is currently working into developing this organization’s structure by collaborating with the SHCCI board of directors, the San Bernardino Diocese, the Los Angeles Diocese, and the Orange County Dioceses. This secular demographic includes more than 2 million Hispanic Catholics. Safe harbor and Rocio’s Mission statement is the call to alleviate the suffering of Jesus with mental health professional resources that can combine faith and psychological approaches.
