LOW VISION 

DEFINATION: Low vision refers to a visual impairment that is not correctable through surgery, pharmaceuticals, glasses, or contact lenses. 

Common causes 

1. macular degeneration,

2. glaucoma,

3. diabetic retinopathy

4. retinitis pigmentosa

DISTANT AIDS:

1. Hand-held monocular and binocular telescopes 

2. spectacle-mounted telescopes 

READING AIDS:

1. hand-held magnifiers,  with or without in-built reading lamps

2.  Height adjustable stand magnifiers

3. Reading telescopes can be hand-held or mounted onto spectacle frames. 

4. Video magnifiers project printed material onto a  screen or computer.

5.  Scanners attached to a computer can ‘read’ printed material through a voice synthesizer.
