This procedure can be performed either under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Your doctor will suggest you the best option that will suit you.

There are two techniques to treat gynecomastia and they are liposuction technique and tissue excision technique.

Liposuction Techniques

Advances in liposuction techniques have enabled plastic surgeons to treat an increasing number of gynecomastia patients. However, it is advisable to visit a board-certified plastic surgeon who is skilled and versed in liposuction and specializes in the treatment of male breast reduction using liposuction.

The process of treating gynecomastia using liposuction involves a plastic surgeon making a small incision on each side of the chest. The incisions may be located within the armpit or along the edge of the areola, depending on your needs and your plastic surgeon’s preference. Through these incisions, excess glandular tissue or fat is removed and a new chest contour is created that looks natural to your body.

Tissue Excision Techniques

This technique is usually used for patients whose skin around the breasts has become stretched and loose. Tissue excision allows the plastic surgeon to remove large amounts of excess fat and/or glandular tissue that cannot be removed by liposuction alone. The incision is usually made within the natural folds of the chest or around the edge of the areola.

Recovery

After gynecomastia surgery, bandages or dressings will be applied to the incisions and a support garment will be used to reduce swelling and support your new chest contours during your recovery. A drainage tube may be placed under the skin to drain any fluid that may accumulate. You will be given specific instructions to follow during your recovery and it is important to adhere to them as they play a huge role in determining your optimal results.

Results

The results of male breast reduction surgery are visible immediately after surgery. Post-operative swelling will heal over time and the surgical scars will also fade over time. It will take approximately 3-6 months to see the final results of the procedure.
