•Applications – Water Quality Monitoring.
•Advantages- This project is a bridge to translate developed functional materials into field usable device for selenium analysis in water.
•Future scope- Novel, environment friendly functional materials integrated with a portable optical system for field analysis of selenium in water.
Groundwater and soil (through plant/food) have been major sources of heavy metals uptake. Therefore, it is required to monitor the water resources for heavy metals presence before consumption. The existing analytical practices utilizing lab limited working environment and expensive instrumentation, limits this freedom. Further, the need for expensive chemicals, trained labor, sampling errors, collection frequency, etc., make it unaffordable for on-site screening of heavy metals. Affordable and user-friendly “field kits” are the alternate substitute, which can be deployed at the decentralized level for screening of water resources before detailed analysis by groundwater bodies. The technology presents alternative probes i.e. sensor materials based upon fluorescence and colorimetry, and the associated portable spectrophotometer for in water for on-site analysis to assess groundwater quality.
