"DNA is an instruction manual for building life. In the Jurassic Park movie, the lead geneticist explains to a group of visitors how they combined dinosaur DNA found in fossilised mosquitoes with frog DNA to bring dinosaurs back to life. Back in the early days of studying DNA and the genome, sci-fi movies such as GATTACA and Jurassic Park brings out all kinds of possibilities of a genomic revolution,” said Dr Li Jingmei, Group Leader, Laboratory of Women’s Health & Genetics, Genome Institute of Singapore, A*STAR."

Your Brand As A Scientist

Oct 31, 2023

Giving a webinar at 9pm is not on my list of favorite things to do. Having fun in the process is one way to circumvent that!

Instruction: Give a 20min talk on how to give an impactful presentation.

Hurdle: Potentially sleepy audience; lack of audience feedback

Solution: Pull in Zi Lin Lim and Renee Wong as collateral damage and make them suffer with me.

The result is many hours of hilarious discussions on engaging an online audience with an interactive format. I particularly like How Drama's "Fat Kids Are Harder to Kidnap" theatre production series, where 31 plays are featured in an hour, and the audience gets to decide the order.

And so we borrowed the idea and brainstormed 10 tips for an impactful presentation. And got the Zoom attendees to select the order in which they wanna learn about the tips behind the cryptic titles. 🤣

Thank you Jessie Wong Ling Ai for the invite! The FAOBMB (Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists) region of IUBMB Trainee Initiative is looking for emerging scientists from the Asian and Oceania region to help shape the next generation of scientists and spread the love of STEM. If you are interested in signing up, the link to the form is in the comments.

If you find the slides adorable, all credit goes to Zi Lin Lim!

Global Forum “The Future of Women and Girls in Science”

Jun 16, 2023

The Global Forum “The Future of Women and Girls in Science” was held on Friday, 16 June 2023, at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris. It is with immense honor that I find myself participating in this event as a speaker for the roundtable discussion titled "Closing the Gender Gap: Lessons Learned, Challenges Faced, and the Path Forward."

During the session, Kiara Nirghin posed thought-provoking questions that struck at the heart of gender equality in science and its impact on both scientific quality and progress. One question she raised was the significance of gender equality in science for the advancement of the field and the quality of scientific outcomes. In the context of my research, which centers around breast cancer, Ms. Nirghin inquired whether research conducted by women leads to better outcomes for women. Furthermore, she inquired about the consequences of women's absence in such research.

Here's an excerpt of my reply:

Ladies, at some point in your life you will be invited to attend a mammography screening. Evidence shows that mammography screening saves lives from breast cancer through early detection. Men, at some point, the important women in your life will be invited for mammography screening. It could be a wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter, or a friend. They will tell you it is P.A.I.N.F.U.L. If you look at the history of mammography, and I mean His Story, who do you think designed the mammography machines? Men. The technology may save lives. However, if women do not attend screening because of pain or any other reason, then lives will still be lost to breast cancer.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge and congratulate all of you who have been supporting women in science and contributing to the progress of gender equality. Our joint efforts have yielded great results. It works! I've been fortunate to have supportive PhD supervisors and role models during my scientific journey, four in total, both men and women. They hail from diverse backgrounds - United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Singapore, and Sweden - and possess expertise in mathematics, epidemiology, nuclear physics, human genetics, and radiation oncology. All of them work together on important breast cancer research. They showed me that my background and expertise do not limit my ability to do good for breast cancer patients.

Furthermore, they have empowered me to have a voice and encouraged me to express my opinions. During vibrant discussions, they would often pause and say, "Jingmei has something to say. Let's listen to her." Growing up in an academic environment that values open dialogue, I have never felt silenced or unheard.

Today, breast cancer research is a joint effort undertaken by both men and women. Just yesterday, I attended a breast cancer meeting in Vienna where brilliant researchers from 85 groups worldwide came together to collaborate on a monumental project: understanding the genetics of breast cancer. This endeavor has resulted in the creation of an invaluable resource comprising half a million breast cancer cases and controls.

The significance of such collaboration cannot be overstated. As someone from Singapore, a relatively small country with around 2,000 new breast cancer cases diagnosed annually, it would take us 250 years to achieve what the consortium accomplished in ~15 years. With breast cancer incidence on the rise globally, it is crucial for not only men and women but also countries to unite and work collectively to save lives.

While we still have a long way to go in attaining gender parity in STEM, let us take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the milestones we have already accomplished!

Global Breast Cancer Conference 2023

Apr 28, 2023

Collaborations today transcend distance and time. Though miles may lie between us, we are never far apart, for collaborations don't count the miles, it's measured by work and art.

I had no expectations of bumping into anyone at all at the Global Breast Cancer Conference in Seoul. Little did I know that I would end up squealing with excitement every other hour when I spotted names and faces I have had the privilege to work with for a long time but never met in person! Zoom has loomed over us for too long!

Under the theme of “Go Beyond Cure of Breast Cancer”, GBCC 2023 effectively accomplished its goal, which is to provide experts and professionals in the field of breast cancer with a profusion of opportunities for pragmatic knowledge exchange and interaction/cooperation. The conference was attended by a total of 2,516 participants from 38 countries.

It's not about how often we meet, or even where we meet, but rather about the quality of the connection we have with our collaborators. I'm blessed to be on this journey of improving the lives of breast cancer patients with this bunch!

Kind people, happy workplace

Apr 25, 2023

The take-home message for me today is that kindness is diverse, depending on culture, emotional needs, and situation. It can be quiet, or it can be loud. It can be personal, corporate, or national. It can mean doing nothing at all, even though that might sometimes be the hardest.

Themed "Kind People, Happy Workplace", the main goal of the National Kindness Conference 2023 is to promote kindness and happiness within the workforce and society as a whole. Through the conference, leaders from various areas of society can collaborate and come up with new ideas to encourage kindness and make it a fundamental value in both work environments and personal lives.

1) I really like Gerard Ee's honest sharing on how avoiding frank performance appraisals is being unkind. #earth

2) Barathan Pasupathi (CEO of Jetstar Asia)'s big heart and leading by example (he's gonna shave his head for charity) will not just make travel more accessible to the world, but also kindness more accessible at the workplace and society. #air

3) None can surpass Simon Leow (Co-Founder, Happiness Initiative)'s ability to read the room and engage the audience, although Maxine the Vaccine is a serious contender. #fire

 4) Priscilla Gan earns the title of world-famous moderator who actively listens and facilitates a respectful and inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas. #water

5) Dr. William Wan's enthusiasm for promoting kindness is truly contagious, and he inspires others to join in his mission to create a kinder, more compassionate world. His positive energy and sense of humor make him a joy to be around, and he has a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. He is kindness personified! #heart

Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! By your powers combined, .... The unsung superheroes are the Singapore Kindness Movement crew who so impeccably organised everything! Solomon Lim Stacey Nonis Michelle Tay Angel Marie Magdoza 😘

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
The world needs more kindness,
It begins with me and you!

We are often caught up in the hustle and bustle of life that we sometimes forget to take the time for ourselves. But self-care is important to both our physical and mental health.

With this in mind, Ngee Ann City, in partnership with Tatler's Front & Female, invited an intimate group of women entrepreneurs and business leaders on a journey of self-care at three beauty and wellness boutiques on the mall's fifth floor: Cheryl W, Oasis Spa and PHS Hairscience. And just in time before the culmination of International Women's Month in March.

15th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) 2023

Jan 18, 2023

I am constantly amazed by the young science talents these days!

Team Project Challenge students at the 15th International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) 2023 hosted by Hwa Chong Institution on Jan 18 had ~8h to build a working prototype of a Rube Goldberg Machine (an intentionally complicated machine to perform a simple task) to either flip a page of a book or throw a bottle cap into a recycling bin.

A minimum of eight different steps (think Newton's cradle, pendulums, golf balls, dominoes, pulleys, gravity etc) were required, chained together to flawlessly turn a page. All the complicated contraptions were simply beautiful to watch!

One question I posted to the teams as one of the judges was, "How would you modify the device to turn more than one page?"

Hands-down out-of-the-box winning answer: "Ma'am, I would tape the two pages together and flip it once!"  Once again, congratulations to the future talents of science!
