NUS continues to awe me with new knowledge I learn and new people I meet. Prince, Apollo, and Twinky. Blood splatter and body farms. Just a few of my favourite dinner conversations that evening!
Thank you, NUS, for the honour of being a young outstanding alumni. It means a lot coming from the university who made me who I am.

The University Scholars Programme (USP) held its annual Homecoming in conjunction with Kent Ridge Alumni Family Day on 17 August. The event welcomed home over 70 USP alumni, students, faculty members and staff.
A tradition of the Homecoming is the USP classes for alumni – where they can relive their good old days as USP students. USP Deputy Director (Academic Matters) Associate Professor Low Boon Chuan conducted a discussion on Life and Love. Dr Li Jingmei (Science + USP '05) shared that, “Attending USP classes again was an experience in a league of its own. As usual, every USP class is cross-disciplinary. I particularly liked how love and life can be discussed biologically, emotionally, and mathematically across time and space”.

"SCIENCE FLOURISHES BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENT APPROACHES THAT MEN AND WOMEN TAKE TO SOLVE PROBLEMS." - LI JINGMEI, GENOME INSTITUTE OF SINGAPORE
“While men and women are fundamentally different, science is genderless. Men and women work together for the good of mankind. Science flourishes because of the different approaches that men and women take to solve problems.”
"Jingmei warns that the glass ceiling—an invisible barrier that keeps a given demographic from rising beyond a certain level in a hierarchy—is typically formed very early in life. "

I'm all set for the event! Happening over the weekend of July 12–14, 2019 is the Science Foo Camp (or "Sci Foo"), an invitation-only gathering organized by Google, O'Reilly Media, and Digital Science, with support from Nature. Sci Foo takes place in Mountain View, CA.
From the invitation email:
"We're inviting about 350 people from around the world who are doing groundbreaking work in diverse areas of science and technology. Participants will include not only researchers but also writers, educators, artists, policy makers, investors, and other thought leaders. The format is highly informal--there's a reason it's called a "camp" rather than a "conference." Sci Foo is a gathering of peers, where attendees are also session leaders and demonstrators. There's no predefined agenda--we'll determine the schedule collaboratively on the first evening."
"Food at Sci Foo: Google’s legendary culinary staff will be providing food throughout the event. In addition to scrumptious breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they’ll stock snacks and drinks in a microkitchen onsite."
Food for the soul and brain!

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women - while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance.
Thank you Disney for featuring me together with other fantastic women (Kyra Poh, Anamah Tan, Sasha Christian, Nabilah Razak, Melissa Tan, Claire Jedrek, Swati Sinha and Yip Pin Xiu) in Singapore! Now I can tell my grandchildren the cast of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson and Gemma Chan) watched a video of me! XD
Also grateful for the opportunity to participate as a panellist together with Dr Anamah Tan, Tom Batchelor and Christina Han at Disney HQ. Collective action and shared responsibility for driving a gender-balanced world is key!

The war against cancer has been waging for decades, and yet we have not centered on a clearly-defined cure. To understand how we can cure cancer, first we must understand that not all cancers are the same and not every cancer manifests the same way in different people. Precision medicine and precision health are providing new tools for curing cancer. Dr Li Jingmei is a Senior Research Scientist at the Genome Institute of Singapore. As an aspiring woman in Science doing Science for women, her work aims to improve women’s health, particularly in the area of breast cancer research. In tribute to the molecule of life, the DNA, she wears double helix earrings. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. “Cancer is many diseases. Cancer on the skin and brain or lung are intrinsically different. If there are 10,000 cancers, we’d need 10,000 cures. There wouldn’t be a catch-all fix. But, with precision medicine, precision health and better treatment and prevention, even if we do not find a cure in this lifetime, we are certainly going to witness amazing progress.” – On curing cancer in this lifetime
