GEO 111 Hazards Field Trip to Staten Island

If you were unable to attend the organized field trip, you should use this web page and associated documents to complete the trip in your own time.

- You can access the Google Maps with all of the locations below. You can get directions to each of the locations from the map itself, either for driving or for using public transportation.

- You must complete the field trip handout. You must also take a selfie at each location, and include it with your handout.

- You can visit the locations in any order, and do not have to visit all of them on the same day.

- Your instructor will let you know what to do with the completed exercise.

Stop 1 - Serpentine Commons

Walk up the footpath you can see from the park entrance. When you reach the fork in the path, head towards the right, not up the hill. You will reach an open area, with a great view of the Verrazano Bridge. You will see green rock beneath your feet and a large house above you at the top of the hill. Answer the questions for "Stop 1".

Stop 2 - Richmond Creek Bluebelt

Download the "Mill Pond Walking Tour" and the "Points of Interest" leaflets below. Follow the map for the individual locations covered in the worksheet.

Stop 3 - South Beach

Walk out on Ocean Breeze fishing pier to look back towards the shore at the dunes and the groin. Answer the questions for "Stop 3".

Stop 4 - Great Kills

Continue along Buffalo Street until the final parking lot. Walk through the dunes and onto the beach and answer the first 3 questions. Then walk along to the southern end of the beach until you reach the large groin and answer the last 2 questions. Follow the path from there through the dunes to a dirt road for an easier walk back to the parking lot.
