Exercise is an important aspect of physical health for all people. For students, exercise can be challenging to incorporate into a daily routine. Beyond building endurance and strength, exercise can improve mental clarity, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve sleep. Finding a type of exercise you enjoy is important, as it helps you maintain a fitness routine and stay consistent.
Not all exercise is running on a treadmill, lifting heavy weights, or competitive sports. Exercise is about getting active in any form of movement you feel comfortable. This can be the traditional gym, but also can include walking outside, dancing, yoga, and even rock climbing! Exercise is any form of movement that requires physical effort and builds physical fitness. Be creative!

Most student schedules do not accommodate daily, lengthy workouts. Exercise is what you make it; as students, it is crucial to maintain balance in your lifestyle.
If you can't set aside time to exercise, make sure to get your steps in. Intentional walking between classes or while completing errands is beneficial to your health.
Make sure you give yourself breaks during long study sessions. We recommend that every 30 minutes to 1 hour, you get up, walk around, and return to your work. Students can become so consumed by their schoolwork that they become sedentary. Incorporate short walking or stretching breaks during your study sessions.
Sedentary lifestyles are harmful for your physical and mental health, both short-term and long-term. College is a good time to practice balancing your schedule while maintaining all aspects of your health.
The USDA and Center for Nutrition Policy and Protection uses their ChooseMyPlate initiative to help you make healthy lifestyle choices. This includes balancing portions of grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteins, as well as incorporating physical activity into your daily routine.
Consult the graphic from the USDA here- they recommend lots of creative ways to be active on a college campus- all of which can be adopted by Drexel University Students.
