Cultural Things to Know:
Indonesia has a rich spiritual culture. Hindu is the most prominent religion in Bali and Muslim is the most prominent religion in Lombok and basically every other island.
Dress respectfully covering shoulders and knees when entering temples. It's best to cover yourself when out and about for respect especially on the Muslim islands.
Never use your left hand to give or receive items (your left hand is for the bathroom)
Avoid stepping on Canang Sari (small flower offerings) on the ground- you will see everywhere
Currency: Rupiah
Official Language: Bahasa Indonesian
Terima Kasha" for Thank you
March 18th is the Ogoh Ogoh Festival at night
March 19th is Nyepi (silent day) everything is closed
Getting Around/ Transportation:
-Download Grab and Gojek before your trip. That way when you land you just open the app and order a ride (it’s similar to Uber & Lyft). You can choose motorbike or car.
-If you don’t drive a motorbike (like me) then it’s best to stay in areas where you can use these apps.
-In Lombok there is no Grab or Gojek, you would have to rent a motorbike to get around.
Bali + Lombok Travel Guide
Canggu
Here's what I gathered from spending 30 hours in Canggu; Tourists who enjoy working out, eating well, and partying. This is not a place for cultural emersion.
Canggu wasn’t my vibe. If you like to workout and party then this might be your place.
Uluwatu
Watch my Uluwatu > Youtube Video experience
Uluwatu is very touristy. but is quieter and more laid back. Think cafes, restaurants, and beaches. It’s a great place to chill for a couple of days. I recommend Spring Spa for the best spa experience.
Where To Eat:
Suka - best strawberry matcha of my month in Bali
Ubud
Ubud Youtube Video Coming Soon...
I absolutely loved my five nights in Ubud. I loved it so much in fact that I plan to visit for 30 days next time. I loved where I stayed, there is so much to do, easy to meet other solo female travelers, and it's so green!
Where To Eat/Drink:
Chontea - best matcha (you can have a full matcha tasting here)
Mundra Cafe- live music and great food
Sayan Point- sunset dinner
Where To Stay:
This is home to Kapri and his wife Ayu. They are the sweet couple. The room and bathroom is huge and clean. I paid $11 a night. Only 15 minutes from the center.
What To Do:
Yoga classes, Water Rafting, Purification, Jewerly making, Monkey Forest, Spas, Temples, Rice Terraces, Waterfalls, Coffee Plantations, it's truly endless! Cinta Bahasa for a 2 hour crash course in Bahasa Indonesian.
Nusa Penida
Watch my > Youtube Video on the experience
This is island close to Bali with terrible roads, the kindest people, and famous for Kelingking beach. Be sure to bring cash since the island is cash heavy! I hosted a scuba diving trip here which was unforgettable. You can have the same experience:
> Eco Hero - Epic Trips x Worldpackers
Scuba Diving:
This is a great place to scuba dive. Go to Manta Point!
Sanctum Diving Center
> https://www.sanctumdiveindonesia.com
Where To Stay:
The room and bathroom is huge and clean. Very close to the port.
Must see beaches:
-Kelingking Beach
-Diamond Beach
Lombok
I have to be honest, I wasn't a fan. I went to Kuta in the South where everyone says, "you have to go for surfing!". Kuta Beach wasn't a great experience, as locals were trying to sell me bracelets the entire time and I saw no one surfing there.
I moved to Selong Belanak Beach which had very small infrequent waves. I wish I could have stayed in the North closer to the port and possibly Senggigi Beach.
I wouldn't recommend someone to take a 2 hour ferry from Bali and a 2 hour car ride to the South of Lombok. Kuta felt similar to Canggu. So might as well stay on the island of Bali to save money and time than going to Lombok.
Now, if you are with a friend or partner who can drive you around the island on a motorbike and you want to hike Rinjani, see waterfalls, and explore a different beach everyday then go for it!
Where To Stay:
A luxurious escape
This lodge is a 10 minute walk from the Selong Belanak Beach and I paid $25 a night including breakfast. Big room, big bathroom, with a view of the common pool.
Where To Eat:
Chez Marlin - best grilled cheese of my life (Central Kuta)
Luana Bowls -great food and you can stay here! (Selong)
Ikigai -healthy & nutritious place
