Student led Projects

Pay As You Go Solar Irrigation For Smallholder Farmers in Dzita

During our programmes, students design renewable energy systems for businesses or organisations in the local community. During our 2021 programme a group of students and volunteers decided to trial PAYG Solar Powrered Irrigation for smallholder farmers in Dzita, where sandy soil and manual irrigation methods hamper yeilds and and take up farmers precious time while they could be studying, or working on other ventures.

The team conducted a survey of 20 farmers in the local area. Over half the farmers said they faced issues with their current irrigation method, and many said they could afford the small monthly payments needed.

We are now working in Partnership with SunCulture who have years of experience delivering solar irrigation projects across East Africa - together we plan to trial small 20 PAYG irrigation systems for a variety of farms to understand which types can benefit from this the most for this sort of system.

If you are interested in this project please get in touch  - we would love to share learning and knowledge with other NGOs and to allow students and trainees the chance to work on this project.
