Dream Journal: Sleep & Lucid ("we", "the app") is built with privacy as a core principle. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app does and does not collect.
TL;DR
Dream Journal does not collect any data about you. All your dreams, voice recordings, photos, drawings, symbols, and stats stay on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. There is no server, no account, no analytics, no ads, and no third-party tracking. If you enable iCloud sync, your data is encrypted and stored in your private Apple iCloud container that only you can access.
What Dream Journal does NOT collect
No personal information (name, email, phone number)
No usage analytics or telemetry
No crash reports sent to us
No advertising identifiers (IDFA)
No location data
No contacts, calendar, or photo library scanning (you pick individual photos when you tap Add Photo)
No third-party SDKs (no Facebook, Google Analytics, Crashlytics, Firebase, Mixpanel, etc.)
What stays on your device
When you use Dream Journal, the following is stored locally on your device only, in Apple's SwiftData private container:
The dreams you write or speak
Voice recordings you make (if you choose to keep them)
Photos and drawings you attach to a dream
Auto-extracted dream symbols and themes (computed on-device)
Reality check schedules and lucid technique progress
App preferences (theme, language, lock state, notification choices)
Voice transcription (Apple Speech)
When you tap the microphone to record a dream, the app uses Apple's SFSpeechRecognizer framework to convert your voice to text. On supported devices the recognition happens fully on-device. Your voice is never uploaded to any server we operate. Apple may use its own on-device or server-side speech recognition depending on your device and iOS settings; this is governed by Apple's own privacy policy.
Apple HealthKit (optional sleep length)
If you grant Dream Journal permission, it reads your sleep length from Apple Health to overlay it on the Insights chart. This data stays on your device and is never sent anywhere. You can revoke this permission at any time in Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Dream Journal. The app never writes anything to HealthKit.
Optional iCloud sync
If you turn on iCloud sync in Settings, your dreams and attachments are stored in your private CloudKit container, which only your Apple ID can access. The developer of Dream Journal has no access to that container. Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy apply. You can disable iCloud sync at any time, and you can delete the iCloud copy by signing out of iCloud or by removing Dream Journal from iCloud Settings on your device.
On-device symbol matching and theme classification
Dream Journal matches your dream text against its built-in dictionary of 500 symbols using Apple's NLTagger framework and a small Core ML classifier (DreamThemeClassifier) that is bundled inside the app. All inference happens on your device. No dream text is ever sent to any external service for analysis.
Notifications
If you enable reminders or reality checks, Dream Journal schedules local notifications via iOS. These notifications are generated and delivered entirely by your device and do not leave it. The app does not use push notifications and has no notification server.
Privacy lock (Face ID, Touch ID, passcode)
You can lock the app with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode via Apple's LocalAuthentication framework. We do not see your biometric data; iOS handles the prompt and returns only a success or failure signal to the app.
Children's privacy
Dream Journal is rated 12+ and intended for users age 12 and up. Because the app collects no personal data of any kind, it complies with COPPA, GDPR, and similar laws regarding the protection of minors.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change this policy, the "Last updated" date at the top will be revised. We will not modify the policy in a way that would suddenly start collecting data. If we ever add a server-side feature in the future, it will be strictly opt-in and described in advance.
