Welcome to dream(S)TEAM! If you are a young woman who is interested in or has ever wondered what a career in science, technology, engineering, art, or math (STEAM) might be like, you are in the right place. On this website you will find the resources you need to begin (or continue!) to explore STEAM careers, including advice from a dream team of women already making a positive difference in STEAM.
This website is a toolkit for you to explore STEAM careers. You can start exploring women in STEAM here, or click on a field of STEAM you are interested in using the toolbar. You can read and hear firsthand the journeys of a team of women in STEAM, see how they overcame challenges to get where they are today, and learn about day-to-day life within various STEAM professions. This dream team of women includes both leaders in the STEAM fields and graduate students, each with top-notch advice for YOU as you start your own journey. Some of the women featured have a career which covers multiple fields in STEAM, and that is quite common! Every woman on this website has a unique story, from becoming a math major after intending to be a high school French teacher to simultaneously pursuing a career as a neuroscientist and successful artist. There is no one set path for having a career in STEAM. Whether you’ve known you want to be a programmer since birth or you’re just starting to explore, an interest in STEAM doesn’t mean you have to have all the answers right now. In fact, most of the women interviewed for dream(S)TEAM shared that when they started their career, they had no idea where they would be now or where their jobs might take them in the future. Their passion has grown and their path has evolved throughout their career!
You might have noticed this website uses the acronym “STEAM” instead of “STEM.” The “A” in STEAM stands for “Art” because creativity and innovation are necessary to science. To find out more about the importance of art to STEAM, please click here.
This website was built for you to hear and learn from each of these wonderful women and role models pursuing their STEAM dreams. Each subject-specific page contains descriptions of the wide variety of opportunities within STEAM and profile pages that include interviews with women in the corresponding field. Be sure not to miss the two video interviews with Dr. Catherine Roberts, Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society, and Arleen Paulino, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing at AMGEN, found on their profile pages with solid advice and inspiration for you as you look into a STEAM career. Of course, not every STEAM job could be featured here--it would be a very long list. By the time you have a career in STEAM, there might be jobs that do not exist yet!
Please fully explore all pages and resources this website has to offer. Some of the information might surprise you! And don't forget to check back periodically, as I plan to add more women and interviews in the future! Remember: you can reach your STEAM goals! There are plenty of successful women in STEAM who started out as young women just like you, and they can’t wait to share their stories to help you dream(S)TEAM.
Hi! I'm Morgan Beck, and the mission of dream(S)TEAM is to provide middle and high school aged young women with a dream team of successful women role models who use their STEAM careers for positive change. By sharing and illustrating the paths of women already in STEAM, dream(S)TEAM hopes to inspire the next generation of STEAM professionals to begin or continue their STEAM dreams.
