You love STEAM, but maybe you want to use your passion for environmental science to develop the newest green cars, or your love of chemistry to help companies best handle radioactive waste, or your affinity for math to design airplanes. If so, engineering might be the right field for you! Engineering is what is known as an “applied science"-- the use of science and math as tools to help design everything from city infrastructure to mouse pads. The field of engineering exists to solve day-to-day problems and is another area that overlaps with many other fields of STEAM.
The awesome thing about engineering is that it applies to any field you might be interested in. Enjoy skateboarding? You could be a skate park engineer. Like fireworks? You could try your hand at pyrotechnic engineering. Take Jessica Xu (interview below) who combined her interests in mechanical engineering, art, and the medical field to create a wheelchair attachment, TILT, that helps safely transport patients with disabilities down flights of stairs. Or Limor Fried, who distinguished herself by taking electrical engineering to the next level when she formed a hub for do-it-yourself electronics innovation. Because of her outstanding work, she became the first female engineer on the front of the magazine Wired. Women everywhere are making a difference through engineering, and you can too. Jessica Xu's advice: "Get your hands dirty...take advantage of unique opportunities and tinker on personal projects to gain skills and find your passion."
