We are a church that is a catalyst, convener and bridge builder. Lutheran Disaster Response collaborates with other disaster response organizations and religious entities in the United States and around the world. This enables the greatest stewardship of resources and maximum impact of response. We are a welcome partner because we respect the perspectives and strengths of others.
We recognize that every disaster is local. Because of this, we believe every response needs to be rooted in the community; we work to accompany that community from immediate relief through long-term recovery. In our international work we partner closely with companion churches and other Lutheran and ecumenical relief agencies to make sure local needs are being addressed and met. In the United States, we work through our extensive affiliate network and other partners to address these same concerns.
Lutheran Disaster Response strives to help the church continue to be church in the midst of disaster — following Christ's call to share hope and healing with our neighbor in need.
The ministry of LDR Carolinas has been funded by grants from Lutheran Disaster Response to provide local faces and voices for this vital ministry. Grounded in faith, we are focused on helping individuals and congregations prepare for disaster and on building a network of resources across North and South Carolina to respond when disasters occur. We are reminded many places in scripture that we can trust in God in any situation:
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
Psalm 46:1-3
When Helene created disaster zones in NC and SC, LDR Carolinas received funds from The Churchwide Lutheran Disaster Response to create staff positions to support volunteers coming to here to provide ongoing assistance to those in need by coordinating volunteers through our local affiliates.
Your financial gifts will support storm survivors. Gifts to LDR Carolinas, 1988 Lutheran Synod Drive, Salisbury NC 28144 for either NC or SC Synod will go directly to helping individuals impacted by the storms.
Ensure that your check is made out to “LDR Carolinas” and you note that you want the money to go towards either WNC or SC Relief efforts.
While your community at home wants to send things and materials to us, we have those resources here. We would suggest instead an ingathering of Walmart, Lowe’s, or Home Depot gift cards (in any amount) that can be used to purchase a variety of tools, building materials, and other supplies to help with the recovery like masks, gloves and sandpaper. It is impossible to predict what we will need when – or where – so the ability to purchase what is needed as it is needed would be incredibly helpful!
Please consider supporting the local economy while here: One way to continue disaster work is to spend money in our community. When you purchase here, it improves the quality of life of the people who live here by boosting the local economy. Go out to dinner, visit local attractions, and support our small businesses. Many small businesses closed during the COVID pandemic. More have closed in response to the Helene disaster. We want to keep these open, keep the unique life of our community growing.
