2023 Distinguished Visitors Announced

3 March 2023 .

The IEEE Computer Society announced the newly appointed distinguished visitors for 2023. Distinguished visitors give technical lectures to the Society’s community of 375,000 members, including its professional section and student branch chapters. Elisa Barney was selected to be in this cohort.

Topics span computing domains such as machine learning, getting published, blockchain, IoT, data science, architecture, RAS, digital twins, and more. Lecturers are available in person throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America and through webinars.

Solving Mysteries in the Humanities

December 1, 2019 by Katianne Williams Electrical engineering is often viewed as a solitary endeavor with lots of equations and/or code. In reality, it is a toolbox, and these tools can be used to advance technology, help humanity, and solve mysteries in the humanities. Dr. Elisa Barney, an electrical and computer engineering professor at Boise State University, Idaho, who specializes in digital image processing and pattern recognition, uses her toolbox to work on problems in material analysis, biomedical image processing, remote sensing, astronomical image processing, and document analysis.

One of the most fascinating areas Barney works in is the digital humanities, where she uses her expertise to explore questions in fields such as English, history, and philosophy. In 2016, she was asked to give a four-part presentation at her church about this work in the digital humanities. These talks were so well received by the community that Barney applied to be a speaker at TEDx-Boise. Once she was selected, Barney condensed four hours of notes to fit the 18-min maximum required for TEDx. In April 2019, she presented her talk, “How Digital Technology Helps Solve Mysteries in the Humanities.” (You can find her TED Talk by searching “Elisa Barney” on TED.com or YouTube.com.)

Full available is in IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

January 13, 2020 – A digital image processing expert from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, professor Elisa Barney, currently is working on a facial recognition research project with collaborators professor Don Winiecki and electrical and computing engineering doctoral candidate Sara Sedighi.

Barney was in Las Vegas last week to showcase the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers student programs at the Consumer Electronics Show.

While at the conference, KPOO radio host Harison Chastang interviewed Barney about her project and the potentially adverse effects facial recognition technology could have on diverse communities.

October 4, 2019 – Elisa Barney Smith presents two papers with doctoral student at ICDAR conference in Australia. PhD student Nishatul Majid won best poster at the ICDAR Doctoral Consortium.

April 20, 2019 – Elisa Barney was one of 12 speakers at the 5th TEDxBoise.  Her talk was

“How digital technology helps solve mysteries in the humanities”. We know that engineers make many things in our daily lives from computers to power grids. They also do many humanitarian projects. There is another less known side: Digital Humanities – using computers and technology to help further the study of the humanities such as art, literature and history. Elisa shares stories of how she has used computers can be used to help further knowledge in history, literature and art. There is much more to this story than just building a webpage.

You can watch it here.

March 5, 2019 – Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Elisa Barney Smith has been appointed the 2019 student activities committee chair for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

In this capacity, Barney Smith will help shape policy, programs, and resources for the more than 100,000 student members in 3,000 student branches at universities in more than 100 countries around the world. Barney Smith also will develop several initiatives to improve the student member experience around the world. IEEE is most known for its journals and IEEExplore publishing database. IEEE sponsors conferences worldwide and is also responsible for several standards for electrical devices.

August 9, 2018Elisa Barney Smith, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Steven Olsen-Smith, Department of English, published a digital text analysis of Herman Melville’s marginalia in The Dramatic Works of William Shakespeare with Boise State University alumni Christopher Ohge, Institute for English Studies at University of London, in Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies 20.2 (June 2018).
