Cobalt's home was the castle that overlooked Hohenwerfen, a once small town built at the base of a mystical ice cave where the ice never melted year round. The castle was built at the top of the cave thousands of feet above the town below it. The castle was unreachable except for a specific route only accessible to those who know the secret path. While Hohenwerfen was once a small town the town had grown into a massive city where large cooperations around the globe hoped to do business.
Falling through the air Cobalt felt free for the first time. The air whipped his face as he felt his heart begin to race. When he was very young he would shift between a dragon and human so much it would sometimes happen when he sneezed. However it had been well over one hundred years since the last time that he had spread his wings. He closed his eyes and imagined himself as a dragon, he felt a warm fire growing in his core. As he opened his eyes ready to soar he let out a burp of smoke.
"Oh crap,"
thought cobalt as he started to plummet through the air the ground starting to appear a lot closer. Cobalt felt the blood rushing toward his head as his vision started to get hazy. Thinking to himself that he should have planned better before he decided to leave. This also made Cobalt think about his father.
~~~It was sunny and early in the morning, Cobalt was with Ormr at the overlook at the top of the castle.
"It is time that you learn to fly boy,"
Ormr told Cobalt with a smile on his face.
"How can I fly father I am not a bird,"
Ormr laughed and put his hand on Cobalt's back and gave him a little push, from the top of the castle.
As Cobalt began to fall he let go a giant scream that was followed by fire that spread throughout the air. He closed his eyes and all he could hear was Ormr laughing. Cobalt couldn't think of anything he was petrified with fear and he screamed for help which was only followed by more laughter from Ormr then Cobalt heard
"Open your eyes!"
When Cobalt opened eyes again he was floating in the air staring at his father as a magnificent dragon cackling at his reaction to his test.
"I want you to always remember, you are incredible and will do great things Cobalt. Always be true to yourself and listen to your instincts. You will go far and do so much better than I did. When you are older I will take you to my original home, I have so much I want to show you."
When Cobalt, flying in the air, saw Ormr smile he felt as if he was the king of the world. He felt such joy and knew everything would be all right.~~~
Cobalt opened his eyes he was flying feet above the ground, as he saw in a puddle of his own tears, his reflection smiling back at him. He made up his mind he was going to go to his father's homeland and try to learn and discover more about his father, the life that he lived, and why he decided to choose the life that he lived.
Author's Note
For this story I wanted to focus on Ormr and Cobalt relationship and show a moment of them together and show how much Cobalt cares about his father and hat his father thinks. The idea for being flung of the cliff came from agoge or a Spartan training where babies were thought to and crippled were thrown off cliffs but in this it is actually a strength to be thrown off a cliff. I also wanted to show Cobalt not knowing who he is and feeling lost and him falling in the air and not being able to do something that used to be so natural and now no matter what he wanted to he couldn't change. It was a physical manifestation of his internal struggle. I also really wanted him to open his eyes to be something that was important and have it relate to fear as a child along with a connection with his father and part of this quest relates to a very vivid memory that he shared with his father. I think showing the relationship that he shared with his father and how it was positive informs more about the characters and some of their motivations. I wanted it to be a puddle that formed from tears that may have started as fear but ended with a happy memory which caused him to smile.
