What is Technical Theatre?

Technical Theatre is the study of the "technical aspects" of theatre. In this class, we learn about:

  • Designing costumes, sets, make-up, marketing materials, sound, lights, and projections

  • Creating and building sets and costumes

  • Acting as backstage and front of house crew

  • "Running" a show as a stage manager, light board, or sound board operator

  • Leading a production and working as a team

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I perform in this class?

No, this class is geared specifically towards the technical and design elements, as listed above. The most a student will be asked to do is present in front of the class, or read out loud from a script. If you would like to perform, tell your counselor you would like to take Theatre Arts.

What if I don't draw?

Drawing is a huge part of this class, and even more so in Tech Theatre II/III. Students are not graded on their drawing ability, they are graded on their adherence to rubric and implementation of design criteria. In other words, it's not how talented you are, it's how hard you try.

Do I need this class to graduate?

You need a certain number of elective and fine arts courses in order to graduate, however, you may find technical theatre is not the right fit for you. Don't suffer through material you don't like, it won't make the experience easier for anyone in class, particularly yourself. Talk to your guidance counselor and let them know the class is not for you.

How do I get involved in productions?

We have productions throughout most of the year and we are ALWAYS looking for people to participate. Whether you're interested in being on stage or behind the scenes, we have a place for you! Fill out this google form to let us know you're interested!
