Dr Sharif is a Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Derby. He has a strong academic, research and industrial background. He acquired his PhD in Composite Materials from the University of Manchester. , funded by Bentley Motors. Before joining Derby University, he worked as a Project Engineer at Glyndwr University on the ASTUTE (Advanced SusTainable manUfacturing Technologies) project to stimulate growth in the Welsh economy by applying advanced engineering technologies to manufacturing challenges. He also has an experience of working as a CAD/CAM Engineer in a reputable automotive OEM part manufacture company in Pakistan.
Dr Sharif is the pioneer to establish Composites Manufacturing Centre at the University of Derby, worth more than £0.7 million. He played a principle role in managing composite research facilities. This includes tendering, procurement and looking after service requirements for equipment's etc.
He is currently supervising four PhD and one MPhil student. The variety of projects include formulation of Novel bio-based Polyfurfuryl Alcohol (PFA) resin system and its thermal, mechanical and processing characterization, 3D composite joining using tufting process, recycled composite sandwich panel impact and fatigue characterization, and design of hybrid composites for improved fatigue life. In addition, he has evaluated several external PhD thesis, both nationally and internationally.
Dr Sharif has a strong track record of delivering academic-industry collaborative projects. He has worked with several industrial partners such as Bentley Motors, SHD Composites, EPM composites, Techman Engineering and Fifth Wheel co. etc. He has successfully taken his laboratory-based research and prototypes into production scale trials on the factory floor. Demonstrating his ability to transfer ideas into research and the knowledge generated from research into production.
He is also experienced in programme development and acquiring their professional accreditation for both Bachelor and Degree Apprentice programmes in Manufacturing. He has severed as a programme leader for both Bachelor programme and Degree apprentice programme for several years. During his programme leadership, Manufacturing programme was able to consistently attain above 90% score in NSS.
