Internship - Machine Translation Start-up, Unbabel, Portugal - 2018

I worked on developing English-Arabic models for the MT engine created for crisis translation with other tasks included annotated machine-translated texts for quality evaluation.

Internship - University of Auckland – New Zealand – 2018

I participated in research and teaching activities as part of the INTERACT project. I also gave several seminars during my secondment in NZ including seminar on Machine Translation and English-Arabic Translation

Erasmus+ Work Placement - University of Catania – Italy – 2017

I was involved in projects on language and culture mediation; immigration and language integration. I also run a series of workshops and seminars for MA students on Machine Translation and English-Arabic Legal Translation.

I participated in projects aims to provide a multilingual aid to healthcare workers to handle patients from other cultures.

Tailored Health Communication in Time of COVID-19 Crisis: The United Kingdom’s Approach between Idea and Reality - – 2019 - School of Modern Languages, Cardiff University

With the emergence of communicable diseases such as COVID-19, achieving effective and efficient communication becomes more imperative, especially with the lack of effective treatment and the rapid spread of the virus. This unpredictable situation requires creating and disseminating an accurate and timely message that can help in preventing and controlling the transmission of the virus through raising public awareness and changing health-related behaviour. Communication failure, however, could lead to a wider spread of the virus and a higher death rate. This was apparent at the start of the current pandemic, especially in a country like the UK, where multilingual and multicultural communities coexist. For health messages to be effective, therefore, they need to be tailored to suit the needs of these communities. The latest figures show that infection rate among Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in the UK is higher than those among White British. The figures pertaining to health outcomes are even worse. This talk will focus on the UK’s approach to health interventions that target minority communities and will address issues of reach, effectiveness and appropriateness while assessing tailored COVID-19 campaign materials. It will also provide insights into how such an approach can be improved to ensure a delivery of tailored and effective messages that can reach and impact the target audience.

BBC NewsHACK: Tools for Multilingual Newsrooms – London – 2019

I was invited to give a talk as a guest speaker and an MT expert - ''Machine Translation for the non-MT experts: Empowering approach''. The event was attended by academics, developers and journalists to work on solving problems and challenges from the world of journalism using technology.

Translation Adaptation and Performance – 2019 - School of Modern Languages, Cardiff University

I gave a seminar on Machine Translation and its Role in Crisis Translation. It was attended by members of staff and students at the University of Cardiff as well as from other institutions and interested bodies in the UK.

Machine Translation (MT) is a technology whereby a computer produces translations from one language into another. In recent years, research in MT has experienced a huge development and nowadays fairly accurate translations can be obtained for certain language pairs. This substantial quality improvement has led to its introduction into professional translation workflows and its potential has been proven beyond the translation industry itself. In fact, in 2010 MT was proven useful as an aid in the response efforts to the Haiti earthquake. In this presentation, we will briefly see what machine translation is and how an MT engine works to then explain how it could be used in disaster preparation and relief operations.

Translating crisis: Translation in disaster preparedness and relief seminar – 2018 - University of Auckland Workshop - New Zealand

I gave a presentation on Machine Translation and its potential use in disaster settings. It was attended by researchers at UoA and members of NGOs and governmental bodies involved in disaster preparedness and response.
