I continue to engage in service that reflects my commitments to the department, school, university, and the professional organizations in order to demonstrate leadership. In regard to accomplishments at the department level, my position as the chair of the search committee and the successful hiring of two full time, tenured assistant professors from that search is evidence of my accomplishments for and with my department. Additionally, I am the Co-Chair for the 2024 SUNY Cortland Literacy Department Conference and have taken the lead in submitting all necessary funding requests and paperwork, including securing both featured speakers. The event does not take place until April 6, 2024, but even organizing the event (which will, undoubtedly, be well attended as it always is) is evidence of my leadership and service accomplishments at the department level.
At the university level, I am most proud of my accomplishment and service for the official TEDxSUNYCortland event. The 2023 TEDxSUNYCortland event was something I began because I believe in the power of story to change lives and worlds. I solicited help from Fred Pierce, Director of Communicatons at SUNY Cortland, in order to bring the event to the SUNY Cortland campus. With the help of speaker application review committee members, tech services, and grounds and maintenance (as well as Dean LaChance and the Literacy Department), the 2023 TEDxSUNYCortland was a huge success. In order to make the official TEDx-event a part of the student experience at SUNY Cortland, I applied for a university-license through TEDx for the 2024 TEDxSUNYCortland event--and it was approved. Now, with the help of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Ann McClellan, the TEDxSUNYCortland event will feature speakers from SUNY Cortland and the surrounding Central New York community as an official SUNY Cortland event. This, too, is evidence of my leadership and service at the university level.
Lastly, my service at the state-level is important for my own learning as I continue to refine my pedagogy through professional development. Just as important to me, though, is how this service within the New York State Education Department (NYSED) allows for me to be a voice for my students, my colleagues, my school, and my university. It is important that SUNY Cortland, and especially the SUNY Cortland School of Education--the largest teacher education program in the SUNY system--be represented in conversations about how teacher education and K-12 teaching is understood and organized across New York. I am honored to be asked to serve on two different state-wide committees as a representative of SUNY Cortland students, staff, faculty, and community members, and this service is an excellent example of my leadership and service at the state-level.
