Flood Stories for Education and Action: A Global Perspective
Flooding impacts over 300 million people annually, and with flood risk projected to double by 2050 due to climate change and population growth, education on flood resilience is critical. This project aimed to test our ‘Flood Stories for Education and Action’ resources, developed in partnership and funded through the Environment Agency, with diverse global stakeholders.
The co-developed pedagogical tools, co-created with teachers and young people across England, include lesson plans guiding students from understanding flooding to taking local action on community flood resilience. The teacher pack further includes:
Two animated 360 immersive videos.
Digital extended learning tools.
Research objectives
This project explored how these resources could be adapted across different societies and cultures. An initial online workshop with UK flood risk stakeholders identified how our tools and methods could be integrated into the health, education and disaster risk reduction sectors within the UK. However, we sought to answer the question: Could these resources be adapted for international contexts facing increased flood risk?

International Engagement & Impact
To address this question, the team conducted international workshops with colleagues in
Understand how stakeholders in different regions perceive and use Flood Stories resources.
Identify ways to enhance flood adaptation measures in diverse contexts.
Foster cross-cultural exchange of knowledge and best practices for flood resilience.
Future Directions
The results from this project will inform the co-creation of new Flood Education resources that:
Reflect global experiences of flooding.
Promote an international approach to flood risk education that is grounded in local, place-based needs.
Align with the Environment Agency's strategic goals on sharing learning and encouraging global innovation in flood management (FCERM National Strategy, 2021, Section 3.5.1 & 3.5.2)
