The plane left the ground in Austin and went winging its way across half the United States, and over the Atlantic Ocean. We were Stokholm bound. I had never been to Sweden before, and the thought of adventuring out on my own was daunting (well terrifying). This was no trip for my job requirements or conference presentations. This was different. I had applied and been accepted to something big, and I intended it to be life-changing.
Most of my life had been spent following the rules and trying not to stand out from the crowd. This was an opportunity for me to create something that I believed in, go somewhere I had never been, and meet people from many other countries. The trip was an investment in my education, and I want to share what I learned with others. I am so glad I submitted that application, not really understanding the impact it would have on me, my career, and even my family. I hope my decision to try will impact my children in a positive way. We have to try, don't we?
Helping teachers experience agency and letting others see the value of their professional learning was something I felt deeply about. I believe no one knows better than one's self how deeply successful learning can impact our practice and way of life.
The Application process helped me define and determine who I was as an educator. I learned so much, and continue to learn through applying the design and creativity lessons I learned. I made many friends, and I value their thoughts and input. I remain connected to many in my cohort today.
The mentor I had is still my friend, (hi Danielle!) and because of that excellent relationship, I am trying to be a good mentor to the next gen Innovator, #SEA19, Anissa. Mentoring goes both ways.
Check out the Google Certifications here. It is more than just earning badges. If you let it, it will change your life.
It is not a media extravaganza, nor is it perfect, but this video is from my heart and years of sitting through pointless professional development. I created the lightboard with a picture frame, black cloth, a light strip I bought online, and neon markers. I recorded it with an Ipevo document camera, We Video, and my trusty Acer Chromebook.
I was full of hope and curiosity and scared to death. I'm so thankful for the scorers who decided to take a chance on me.
